Sir Richard Dalton is President of the British-Iranian Chamber of Commerce and former UK Ambassador to Iran. He is currently an Associate Fellow of the Middle East and North Africa Programme at Chatham House and a leading commentator on Iran. In 1992 he published a study for Chatham House, entitled: “Peace in the Gulf: A long term view”, advocating greater regional security cooperation between GCC states, Iraq and Iran. From 1993-1997 he was UK Consul General to Jerusalem responsible for dealings with the Palestinian Authority after the signing of the Oslo Accords.After a spell from 1998-1999 as Director of Personnel in the Foreign and Commonwealth Office in London, he re-established UK diplomatic relations with Libya in 1999 as the first Ambassador to Tripoli for 17 years. From 2002-2006 he was UK Ambassador in Tehran, playing a part in European negotiations with Iran. He co-wrote the Chatham House Research Paper of September 2014: “Iran’s Nuclear Future".
Tom Keatinge is Director of the Centre for Financial Crime and Security Studies at RUSI. Prior to this, Tom had a twenty-year career at J P Morgan. In 2011–12 he took a sabbatical from J P Morgan to study for a Master’s in Intelligence and International Security at King’s College London.
He now focuses his research on the field of ‘finance and security’ studying issues related to illicit and threat finance as well as the coercive use of finance tools to disrupt terrorist groups and exert geopolitical pressure via sanctions. In particular he focuses on the way in which the security objectives of the international community are delegated to the private sector either in the field of sanctions implementation or as it relates to combating terrorist financing.
Ali Ansari is Professor of Iranian History and Director of the Institute for Iranian Studies at the University of St Andrews; Senior Associate Fellow, Royal United Services Institute; and President of the British Institute for Persian Studies.
He has authored several books including: The Politics of Nationalism in Modern Iran CUP, 2012, Crisis of Authority: Iran's 2009 Presidential Election (Chatham House, 2010); Iran Under Ahmadinejad (Adelphi Paper, IISS, January 2008), Confronting Iran: the failure of US policy and the roots of mistrust (Hurst, London, 2006),Modern Iran since 1921: the Pahlavis and after (2nd Edition, Longman, London, 2007), Iran, Islam & Democracy - The Politics of Managing Change (2nd Edition, RIIA, London, 2006). He is also Editor of the Cambridge History of Iran Vol 8 (The Islamic Republic).
Michael Lyons is a Senior Associate at Clifford Chance. He provides specialist advice on international financial and trade sanctions issues to financial institutions, corporate enterprises and other clients. In recent years he has been advising in depth on issues arising as a result of the EU and US sanctions imposed in relation to Iran and Russia among other regimes. He has provided advice to clients in various jurisdictions across Europe on the effect and extent of these sanctions on different transactions and business scenarios, co-ordinating with Clifford Chance's Washington DC office on US issues. He has also advised on litigation with sanctions issues, including an ongoing case related to frozen funds of the Iranian Government, and has co-authored a number of client publications.
Jonathan Friedman is an Assistant Director in the Due Diligence and Strategic Research practice in Stroz Friedberg’s London office. He is responsible for overseeing due diligence investigations in the Middle East and North Africa, and managing strategic research projects, including executive-level political risk workshops, security threat assessments and terrorism threat monitors.
Before joining Stroz Friedberg, Mr. Friedman held positions as a political, security and corporate risk consultant at a global risk consultancy. He began his career working in various roles on Capitol Hill, including for US Vice President Joe Biden. Mr. Friedman is a recognised authority on Middle Eastern affairs, advising investors, government policymakers and non-profits on developments in the region.
