Tips, Tricks, and Traps for Charities - Michael Loewen, CPA, CA - Loewen Kruse

Michael will be discussing various accounting and compliance issues that charities face, and will provide helpful solutions for these issues.  As well, Michael will provide an update for accounting, auditing and CRA pronouncements for 2015.  We will have time for questions.

CRA Charity Audits - A Primer - Charles De Jager - De Jager Volkenant & Company

This workshop will address CRA charity compliance audits. Topics covered will include CRA audit authority, approach and process, audit preparation, audit day, CRA audit findings and possible responses and appeal rights. The workshop will also touch on issues that commonly arise on a CRA audit including inadequate books and records, gifts to non-qualified donees, insufficient direction and control, political activities, private benefit, defective T3010s and improper donation receipts.

New Societies Act Update  - Ken Volkenant - De Jager Volkenant & Company

The New BC Societies Act, which will replace our current Society Act, received Royal Assent in May 2015 and is expected to be proclaimed into force within the next 12 months. We will provide an overview of the anticipated “transition process” that every BC society will need to take and some of the key issues that your society should consider in terms of updating governing documents at the time of transition.

Governance Lessons from the Portland Hotel Society - Luke Johnson - De Jager Volkenant & Company

The 2014 Portland Hotel Society crisis offers valuable lessons for charities and their directors on proper governance and financial management, supervision of staff, financial oversight, public expectations and director liabilities. This workshop will help board members understand director duties, conflicts of interest, and best practices in not-for-profit governance.
