Tax Audits and Objections

by Peter Baek, CPA, CA, LLB, Partner, Fogler Rubinoff LLP

In recent years, the CRA has been quite active with audits, reassessments and other enforcement activities with many taxpayers facing significant tax exposure.  Many taxpayers are turning to their accountants for help as their first line of defence.  How can CPAs help their clients?  Drawing upon his experience as a former CRA tax auditor and tax litigator, Peter will shares his thoughts and tips on how to deal with tax audits and objections as well as other issues relating to the tax dispute resolution process.

Peter Baek is a Partner at Fogler Rubinoff LLP. He carries on a general tax practice with a particular emphasis on tax litigation and dispute resolution.

Peter has extensive experience representing and counseling clients in tax controversy matters. Drawing upon his experience as a CRA tax auditor, CA and lawyer, Peter has achieved significant tax savings for his clients in numerous tax matters at various levels of the tax administration process from tax audits to Tax Court of Canada appeals.

How Technology can boost efficiencies for Small Business Accountants

Jamie is a recovering lawyer and a repeat entrepreneur. Prior to Hubcoc, Jamie co-founded Sparkroom, a software company focused on marketing automation, which was purchased in 2010 by Nelnet Inc. Prior to that, Jamie practiced law at Torys LLP in Toronto and Wilson Sonsini in San Francisco, specializing in corporate finance for technology companies.  Jamie graduated from Brown University with a B.A. in International Relations and also holds JD & MBA degrees from the University of Toronto.

Equity Crowdfunding and Creditor Proofing

This presentation reviews the current rules for issuing shares without a prospectus, the recent changes and the current status of equity crowd funding. The changes relate to the “accreditor investor” exemption, the minimum amount exemption, and a new family, friends and business associates exemption for Ontario.

David will also review the common methods of asset protection and then look at the lines not to be crossed in the form of the various statutory prohibitions and tools that can be used to set aside asset protection schemes that have gone too far.

David Street is a partner at Lerners LLP practicing in the areas of business law, estates and real estate with emphasis on the establishment and expansion of entrepreneurial businesses, mergers and acquisitions, securities, corporate finance and reorganization transactions involving private companies. Corporate finance activities include bank financings, venture capital and exempt offerings. A special interest is the drafting of complex agreements for use in a broad range of commercial activities and estate planning.
