Featuring : Paul Wehman, PhD, Professor, Virginia Commonwealth University, Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation and Professor, Medical College of Virginia, Joint Appointment in Department of Special Education and Disability Policy, School of Education; and Department of Rehabilitation Counseling, School of Allied Health Professions Lecture Summary: A critical element of empowerment for people with disabilities is participating in inclusive, competitive and meaningful employment opportunities. Dr. Paul Wehman is an expert who will discuss the transition to work for individuals with autism. He will discuss how to implement workplace supports (including assistive technology and personal assistance); reconciling the different perspectives of employers and employees; understanding and using DDA work incentives; matching individual preferences with satisfying work; and helping individuals make alternate work arrangements, such as self-employment and telecommuting. Followed by a panel discussion with professionals in the field and young adults with autism spectrum disorders (ASD). Panelists will include: Debra Dunn, JD, Moderator, parent and consultant to CAR This lecture is intended for individuals with ASD, their families, and professionals supporting them.
