WHAT: 1-DAY TECHNICAL SEMINAR (7 Professional Development Hours)

TOPICS: DRILLING AND GROUTING TECHNIQUES, SELECTION AND DESIGN OF GROUND MODIFICATION FOR LIQUEFACTION, BLAST DENISIFICATION OF LIQUEFIABLE SOILS

WHEN: SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 7, 2015, 8:00 AM TO 5:00 PM

WHERE: LLOYD LEARNING CENTER, PORTLAND, OREGON

The ASCE Oregon Section Geotechnical Group is hosting a 1-day technical seminar on development of drilling techniques, advances in rock grouting techniques, cutoff walls, selection design and specification for ground modification for mitigating earthquake induced liquefaction, and blast densification of liquefiable materials. The seminar will focus on theoretic aspects during the morning sessions, and case studies in the afternoon. A short panel discussion will follow the presentation in the afternoon.

This seminar will provide an opportunity to learn about the geotechnical aspects of grouting, and selection of ground modification techniques, interact with other professionals from the community, and earn Professional Development Hours required by Oregon State Board of Examiners for Engineers and Land Surveyors to maintain your PE license.

SCHEDULE:

7:30 am - 8:00 am:  Registration

8:00 am - 8:15 am:  Welcome and Introductions

8:15 am - Noon:  Dr. Donald Bruce - “Development of Drilling Techniques, Advances in Rock Grouting Techniques, Cutoff Walls for Dams and Levees, Grouting Considerations for Anchors and Micropiles”.

Noon - 12:30 pm:  Lunch (provided)

12:30 pm - 3:30 pm:  Dr. Juan Baez - "Selection, Design and Specification of Ground Modification for Mitigation of Earthquake-Induced Liquefaction".

3:30 pm - 4:30 pm:  Jerry Wallace - "Blast Densification of Liquefiable Soils".

4:30 pm - 5:00 pm:  Open Panel Discussion with Speakers

BIOGRAPHIES:

Dr. Donald Bruce with Geosystems L.P. has worked in specialty geotechnical construction in various countries and projects throughout the world before becoming Technical Director of Nicholson Construction, Pittsburgh, PA, from 1986-1996.  Since then, he has been President of Geosystems, L.P., a consultancy based in Pittsburgh, PA and Scottsdale, AZ, specializing in the application of ground treatment, improvement and retention techniques.  As such, he has participated in over 1,000 projects in 6 continents, principally associated with dams, levees, deep foundations, tunnels and mines.  Dr. Bruce received his BS (Geology and Mineralogy) and Ph.D (Geotechnical Engineering) from Aberdeen University, Scotland.

Dr. Juan Baez with AGI has over 25 years of experience as contractor, designer, and consultant in geotechnical construction and Ground Improvement Technologies. He is president and founder (established in 2004) of Advanced Geosolutions, Inc. (AGI), a company specializing in Design-Build ground improvement and specialty piles. His prior construction and management experience included 16 years with Hayward Baker, Inc.; the last 4 years as Vice President for the Western Region.  Dr. Baez obtained a Civil Engineering degree in Construction Management (1986) and Master’s degree in Geotechnical Engineering (1988) from NC State University; after some years of industry experience he obtianed a PhD in Geotechnical Engineering from the University of Southern California (1995).

Jerry Wallace, President of Wallace Technical Blasting, Inc. has over 35 years experience as a licensed blaster, and his recognized as an industry expert.  His background includes extensive experience as both a blast design superintendent and blast design reviewer.

DETAILS:

The cost of the 1-day seminar is $200.00 for professional attendees and $100.00 for students.  The class fees include a course binder with all the materials.  Morning snacks, coffee and catered lunch will be provided to attendees.  The class size will be limited to about 60 people, so please sign up     early to ensure your attendance.
