Transformative Writing Studio

You can want to be a better writer, you can even long to be published, and this class will help you toward both those goals, but in Transformative Writing we are primarily concerned with the achievement of peace that comes from heightened awareness and the reward of individuation.

Transformative Writing can help you better understand yourself, your life and your place in the world. It can put the outer world into necessary perspective as well. Finally, TW can help you awaken, and work on, hidden aspects of yourself that are attracting and even creating chaos in your life.

This eight week series follows the following schedule:

Jan. 13 - 12:00 p.m. - 6:00 p.m.

This six hour workshop preps you on a variety of meditations, the free writing technique we'll be using, and my sensory based scene writing format. You also get to meet your fellow workshop attendees, develop rapport, discuss boundaries, and establish goals.

Jan.  20 - Feb. 24 - 12:00 - 2:00 p.m.

These six classes will all follow the same process: We will have a twenty minute meditation which will vary each week but will include. Metta from the Pali tradition, Tong Len from Tibetan Buddhism, Yogic Breathing Meditation, Centering Prayer from the Contemplative tradition, and meditations from Eckhart Tolle. The meditation will be followed by a twenty minute free write, during which one specific image or moment will be unearthed and then converted to a scene. The writer will then develop that one image or moment into a full scene. There will be a debriefing at the end of each class and writers will be instructed to continue refining their scene over the next week.

Mar. 3 - 12:00 p.m. - 6:00 p.m.

We will wrap the series with this day of meditation and discussion about the six scenes written by each student. The scenes will be read and potentially developed. Some will decide to continue writing and need a writing plan, others will want advice on expanded healing paths/methods and so options will be discussed. There also may be a core group who would like to continue the TW Studio, and this option will be explored as well.

The novelist Jane Smiley believes story is born in the limbic system and rises to the level of mind to be organized through the frontal lobe. Robert Olen Butler, also a novelist, only creates from arising of image, saying that is where the heat lives in all story. I believe that without story, human beings cannot evolve, and that right now, we desperately need stories that take us beyond the ego.

The Transformative Writing Studio is part of a movement of awakening. You either are part of that movement already, or you are on the edge of stepping into that movement. Either way, this class will certainly be a major journey on the path.

I hope you will join us.
