The 2019 Summer Studio

I Am Becoming a Writer!

Becoming, by Michelle Obama, is my new favorite memoir, for its content but also for voice and structure. When a book like this comes along, the first thing I want to do is break it down and figure out how the writer (and her editor) did it!

Join me in this comprehensive analysis, which will teach you how to discover and then apply your own unique and authentic voice to your story telling. This teaching will apply to both fiction and memoir writers, because Obama uses literary techniques in her book, but to sweeten the teaching, I'll also be breaking down a short novel to show how fiction and memoir are not that far apart.

Finally, as part of this once a week, four part summer class, I'll be providing those working on memoir with a workbook to help them document their lives and narrow down which experiences can be the basis of a memoir. For fiction writers, I'll be teaching the creative technique of what-if questions, to help outline a book, as well and breaking down the first draft and second draft criteria as taught by Jane Smiley in 13 Ways of Looking at the Novel

All writers in this workshop will leave the Summer Studio with concrete tools for writing a zero and first draft, and will learn that they CAN write a book

Yes! You can take this class virtually as well. Email me for details, jclauck@gmail.com.
