 Meet the Panelists for Session 1:

  Derek Davis - Moderator
Executive Director, Harvard Law School Center on the Legal Profession.

Derek Davis is the Executive Director of the Harvard Law School Center on the Legal Profession (CLP).  Prior to joining HLS, Mr. Davis worked as a business attorney for more than twenty-three years in a legal practice focused on corporate and public policy related matters involving privately held companies, public corporations, and non-profit organizations and institutions of higher education.  As Executive Director of CLP, Mr. Davis works collaboratively with a talented team of professionals, research fellows and faculty to examine the structures, norms and dynamics of the global legal profession.  Prior to joining HLS, Mr. Davis was a shareholder in the Business/Public Finance Department at Greenberg Traurig LLP in Boston.  Mr. Davis also practiced at the Boston law firms of Foley Hoag LLP, Goldstein & Manello LLP, Peabody & Arnold LLP, and Nutter McClennen & Fish LLP.

 

Dennis Coleman - Panelist
Partner, Ropes & Gray LLP

 Mr. Coleman is a partner at Ropes & Gray LLP, and leads a nationwide sports, media, and entertainment practice.  Mr. Coleman represents a variety of sports industry clients, such as the National Football League, the Boston Red Sox, the National Association of Basketball Coaches, the National Collegiate Athletic Association and a variety of head football and basketball coaches and broadcasters in contract, sponsorship, and endorsement matters.  Mr. Coleman’s clients include over 25 head coaches in basketball and football.  Mr. Coleman also represents 14-time Emmy Award Winning broadcaster Dick Enberg and Tony Dungy, sportscaster and former head coach of the NFL’s Indianapolis Colts.  In addition, Mr. Coleman works regularly with partners across the firm to solve complex problems for sports industry clients, such as compliance and enforcement issues with government enforcement partners and intellectual property and licensing issues with IP partners.

Mark Roellig - Panelist
Executive Vice President and General Counsel,  Massachusetts Mutual Life Insurance Company

 Mark Roellig is Executive Vice President and General Counsel of Massachusetts Mutual Life Insurance Company (“MassMutual”), the parent company of a global, growth-oriented, diversified financial services organization, listed 94th in Fortune’s ranking of America’s largest corporations with $651 billion in total assets under management.  MassMutual is headquartered in Springfield, Massachusetts. In his capacity as MassMutual’s General Counsel, Mr. Roellig is responsible for all the legal affairs of the Company and advises management and the board of directors to ensure that MassMutual complies with corporate-governance requirements and safeguards the interests of MassMutual’s policyholders.  Mr. Roellig is also responsible for the corporate secretary, corporate compliance, internal audit, government relations and the Corporate Business Resources and Real Estate and Facilities Departments of MassMutual.  Mr. Roellig is also currently an adjunct facility member at the University of Colorado Law School and teaches a class on “An Introduction to In-House Practice.”  Mr. Roellig is a past president of the Lawyers Collaborative for Diversity, former board member of the Institute for Inclusion in the Legal Profession, and recipient of the 2010 Boston Bar Association Beacon Award for advancing diversity and inclusion in the legal profession.

Jacquelynne J. Bowman - Panelist
Executive Director, Greater Boston Legal Services

 Ms. Bowman became Executive Director for the Greater Boston Legal Services (“GBLS”) in August, 2011 and is responsible for the overall management and operations of GBLS.   Ms. Bowman initially started work at GBLS as a senior attorney and then Managing Attorney of the Family Law Unit.  Ms. Bowman left GBLS in 1991, to work at the Massachusetts Law Reform Institute as the state support attorney for family and juvenile law matters.  Ms. Bowman returned to GBLS in 1998, first as an Associate Director and then later became the Deputy Director. Ms. Bowman is a nationally recognized expert in family and juvenile law as well as in law practice management.  She serves on the Access to Justice Commission of the SJC as well as several boards of non-profit organizations.

Robert L. Clayton - Panelist
Of Counsel- Gonzalez Saggio & Harlan (D.C. Office)

Mr. Clayton is of counsel for Gonzalez Saggio & Harlan, one of the nation’s largest minority-owned law firms and the largest minority business enterprise law firm with an office in Boston.  Mr. Clayton focuses his practice in the areas of labor management relations, employment, sports, education, regulatory compliance and government affairs.  Mr. Clayton also serves as a trusted advisor to technology and energy companies on regulatory and legal matters in privacy and data protection.  Prior to joining Gonzalez Saggio & Harlan, Mr. Clayton was a partner with such large law firms as Mintz, Levin, Cohn, Ferris Glovsky and Popeo, PC, Jackson Lewis, and Littler Mendelson.  Mr. Clayton also served as a trial attorney for the National Labor Relations Board, and has more than 30 years of experience with unfair labor practices, arbitration, and collective bargaining negotiations in the healthcare, communications, transportation, construction, printing, gas utility, gaming and sports industries.  Mr. Clayton is a former associate dean and Professor of Tulane Law School.
