"Malware on Mobile: The What, The Why, and The How"

Our November Presentation: Just how safe and secure is your smartphone?  Mobile devices have become an indispensable part of our everyday lives. They possess an ever-increasing amount of both computational resources and access to sensitive user information. As a result, these devices have become attractive targets for attacks. This talk will cover recent mobile malware trends (the what), the main incentives and motivations behind the attacks (the why), and the techniques currently used for malware distribution (the how). It will also provide an overview of the research being done by the UCSB Security Lab in the area of mobile security.

Our Speaker: Yanick Fratantonio is a PhD candidate in Computer Science at UC Santa Barbara, where he works in the Security Lab with Professors Giovanni Vigna and Christopher Kruegel. His research studies the development and application of techniques to secure mobile platforms. He also builds security systems for use by the computer security community. Such systems include Andrubis, a publicly-available service that analyzes Android applications. In his free time, he participates in Capture The Flag computer security competitions with UCSB's award-winning hacking team, Shellphish.
