The Presenters for this year's symposium are:

 

  Shawna Coronado - Shawna is an author, columnist, blogger, photographer, media host and brand ambassador with green lifestyle living, organic gardening, and low-cost culinary who campaigns for social good.  She is also an on-camera spokesperson and social media personality with over 375,000 followers on her various social media venues and a YouTube channel with over a million views.  She co-hosts "The Good Green Home Show" which is a radio show promoting healthy home living, regularly appears on national television, and hosts the FOX News team bi-weekly at  her home garden as the FOX News Chicago "Gardening with Good Day" organic gardening expert.  Shawna's garden and eco-adventure have been featured in many media venues including PBS television.  Her website is www.shawnacoronado.com

Shawna will be presenting two topics at the symposium.

Topic 1:  Creative Ideas for Building a Suburban Water Saving Ornamental Edible Garden

Topic 2:  How to Grow 35 to 40 Organic Plants Within a 2 Square Foot Garden.

 

Bill Hahn - Bill is a Registered Landscape Architect and a Certified Arborist/Municipal Specialist.  He is employed by the City of Akron and since February of 1993 has held the title of City Arborist and Horticulturist.  He has received several citations for his work including Akron's winning the 2003 America in Bloom National competition for the 101,000-300,000 population category, Neptune Park Historic Restoration, and the Akron Noise Attenuation Project being featured by Scenic America as an "Environmental Solution" to highway noise.  He is an environmental entusiast, is well traveled, visiting many of the national, state, and provincial parks, gardens arboreta and nursery growers.  

Bill will be presenting "Historic Trees"A presentation about the biggest and oldest trees that are almost deified around the world.

 

Doug Parkinson - Doug is an account and program development representative for Four Star Greenhouse.  Four Star is the number one supplier of Proven Winners young plants/liners to the horticulture industry in North America.  In his position with Four Star, Doug assists greenhouses nationwide with building their Proven Winners program.

Doug has worked most of his professional life in the horticulture industry.  He spent three years in independent garden center management, eight years with Yoder Brothers, an international plant breeder and supplier, and seven years with EuroAmerican Proven Winners as the Southeastern Regional Sales Manager.

He is a passionate gardener.  He lives and gardens in Zoar, where his gardenhas been a popular stop on the Beyond the Fences of Zoar garden tour.  In his spare time, Doug trains and competes in various dog shows with his 3 beloved German Wirehaired Pointers.

Doug will be presenting "New and Must Have From Proven Winners -- Containers and landscape ideas".   This presentation typically includes annuals, perennials, ColorChoice  Shrubs - all from Proven Winners.  There will be photos of various varieities grown in upright containers, langing baskets and in the landscape to show the versatility of Proven Winners plants.

 

Fred Thaxton - Fred and Chris Thaxton are the founders of Thaxton's Organic Garlic in Hudson, Ohio.  They are both high school science teachers.  Fred is now retired from teaching and tends the garlic business.   He grew up in Kent and received his BS and MA from KSU.  His website is thaxtonsorganicgarlic.com.

Fred will be presenting "Growing Garlic Sustainably".  His presentation will educate you on how to develop healthy soil and crops without damaging the environment.  You will learn what he does throughout the year to grow garlic under the current organic certification process.
