Understanding Organizational Culture and Its Impact on Safety Culture

The National Center for Rural Road Safety (Safety Center) will be hosting a FREE, one hour online training event.

This Safety Center sponsored webinar will provide an overview of organizational culture, key factors that influence organizational culture, and how leaders can change their culture with respect to building a stronger safety culture.  This presentation provides the highlights of the recent plenary discussion “Understanding Culture” given at the TRB sponsored 2nd National Summit on Roadway Safety Culture at the National Academy of Sciences in Washington D.C. and includes practical case study examples of what others have done to improve their cultures.

After the course, participants will have basic understanding of:

  • The definition and relevance of organization culture.
  • The key factors that influence organizational culture.
  • The change management processes that can support an organization changing its culture.
  • Case studies from a variety of industries of how others have deliberately improved their corporate culture.

The course presenters include:

William Schell, Assistant Professor of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering at Montana State University Bozeman

  • Dr. William Schell (PE, PEM) earned his Ph.D. in Industrial and Systems Engineering – Engineering Management from the University of Alabama in Huntsville.  Schell’s research is focused on organizational development, specifically models of leadership development and the role of leadership in change management processes, including a recent study in healthcare which won the 2014 Eschenbach Prize from the American Society of Engineering Management. Throughout his fourteen-year industry career – American Express (Director – Global Business Transformation), Wells Fargo (VP – Operations Engineering) and PrintingforLess.com (VP – Strategy and Development) – he was responsible for designing and implementing large scale change initiatives to improve business performance.  This work included development of organizational development tools (e.g. knowledge management systems, employee training programs, etc.) needed to transform organization culture and drive higher organizational performance.
