To be effective, nonprofit organizations need to have a clear sense of self and good understanding of the legal environment within which they operate. Even the smallest nonprofits hire employees and independent contractors, sign contracts, buy and sell real estate, have licensing requirements, and face legal claims. To meet regulatory expectations, nonprofit boards also need to be sure to have a variety of governance policies and procedures in place; including, conflict of interest, whistle blower and document retention policies.
Knowing how and when to hire a lawyer helps nonprofits operate confidently and successfully. Anticipating and dealing effectively with legal issues helps avoid harm to an organization’s reputation when problems do arise and become public.
