The Business of Writing

with Karen Terrey of Tangled Roots Writing

 Thursday March 24th, 7 to 9 pm

So you want to be a writer? Karen Terrey will share tips, tools and resources for developing a writing career and making a living as a writer of poetry, fiction and/or creative nonfiction.

•How to develop a writing process in your busy life that meets goals and deadlines

•How to edit and publish your work – self publishing, finding an agent/publisher, submissions, marketing

•How to work with an editor or writing coach – learning the craft, developmental vs. copy editing, radical revision

•Building an author platform – online and on the ground in a literary community

•Opportunities for increasing exposure – teaching, talks, book clubs, poets in the schools, book store events, partnering with other writers/businesses, donating expertise, interest groups, libraries, pet therapy programs, workshops, other mediums, networking

•Possibilities for your writing – novel, memoir, short story, novella, poetry, freelance writing, journalism, blogging

“It is necessary to any originality to have the courage to be an amateur” – Wallace Stevens

Experimental musical composer John Cage said "I am trying to check my habits of seeing, to counter them for the sake of greater freshness. I am trying to be unfamiliar with what I'm doing." It is with this fresh perspective that the path of making a living as a writer is, like the writing process itself, an organic re-visioning.

Karen Terrey is a writer, editor, and writing coach, offering fiction, nonfiction and poetry manuscript review and editing,  business writing, copy editing, publishing guidance, and creative writing workshops in Truckee through her business Tangled Roots Writing for clients of all ages.  She has taught at Lake Tahoe Community College, Sierra Nevada College and Sierra College and has served as a poetry editor for the literary journals Pitkin Review and Quay. She is a recipient of a Sierra Arts Endowment Grant, the John Woods Scholarship to Prague Summer Program, the Steve Turner Scholarship to Surprise Valley Writer's Conference, and a scholarship to the Vermont Studio Center. Her award-winning poems have appeared in Rhino, Edge, Meadow, WordRiot, Puerto Del Sol, Wicked Alice, Canary, and Gray Sparrow Journal, among others. Her poetry chapbook Bite and Blood published by Finishing Line Press is now available at local bookstores and online.  She has an MFA in Creative Writing from Goddard College in Plainfield, VT., and continues graduate work in Literature at UNR.
