Prospect Research Off the Side of Your Desk:
Research for the Non-Researchers

About the topic: As nonprofit professionals, we work hard to ensure we’re making the very best use of our organizations’ resources. By prioritizing prospects, gift officers spend more time building relationships with those donors who have the greatest ability and inclination to give, ensuring our fundraising budgets achieve the greatest impact.

This session will cover quick, free ways to prioritize your prospective donors using simple online research available to anyone with an internet connection and a library card. We’ll cover:

  • How to find and value a prospect’s real estate holdings
  • How to find political donations, and what we can learn from them
  • Online search strategies to uncover giving to other organizations
  • How to read a Foundation 990

Attendees will leave the session with ideas for how to save on their most precious resource—time!

About the speaker: Tim Enman is a research analyst with Smith College. Prior to joining the development team at Smith in 2013, he was a prospect researcher with Clark University in Worcester, MA. Before beginning his career in development, he worked with Sentient Jet in South Weymouth, MA, arranging private air travel for high-net-worth clients. He holds a B.A. from Concordia University in Montreal, QC. Tim is a member of the board of the New England Development Research Association, where he serves as co-chair of the programming committee.
