Akron General’s Stover and Cleveland Clinic’s Cosgrove to speak at Press Club Feb. 2

Akron General Health System CEO Dr. Thomas “Tim” Stover and Cleveland Clinic CEO Dr. Toby Cosgrove will speak at the Akron Press Club on Tuesday, February 2. Lunch will be at 11:45 a.m., and the program will follow. There will be the opportunity for questions from the audience.

The Greater Akron Chamber is a co-sponsor of this event.

Akron General became part of Cleveland Clinic in November 2015. Cleveland Clinic will make at least $29.8 million in capital improvements to Akron General Health System in the first year of ownership and similar amounts annually for the next four years. This money is in addition to an initial investment of $100 million.

The relationship between Akron General and Cleveland Clinic has produced work teams that have been collaborating on a number of initiatives resulting in clinical improvements, cost savings and the sharing of best practices. Stover and Cosgrove will speak about the relationship during the luncheon.

In 2012, Stover became the first physician to lead Akron General. He joined Akron General in 1993. Through different leadership roles, he has championed the promotion of health and wellness initiatives.

Stover received his bachelor’s and medical degrees from West Virginia University and a master’s of business administration from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. He completed his internship and residency in obstetrics and gynecology at Akron City Hospital.

Cosgrove was named Cleveland Clinic chief executive in 2004. He joined Cleveland Clinic in 1975 and was named chairman of the Department of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery in 1989.

Cosgrove received his medical degree from the University of Virginia in Charlottesville and completed his clinical training at Massachusetts General Hospital, Boston Children’s Hospital and Brook General Hospital in London. His undergraduate work was at Williams College in Williamstown, Massachusetts.
