Inspiring, Educational & Fun Library Staff Days Webcast

Description:

A great staff day is inspiring, educational, and, yes fun. The best involve the entire staff in planning a balance of information and entertainment, thanks and hopefully, a glimpse of the future. Some people think they are a waste of time, but even small libraries can take time out to share ideas and positive experiences once a year.

Ten Tips:

• NEVER use staff days to scold your employees.
• Staff members plan the day, warts and all.
• Involve your board and community leadership to come, help out, and praise! (But no campaign speeches.)
• Beg, borrow, or steal the money for best quality food!
• Ruthlessly “vet” potential speakers and performers.
• Keep “everybody has to take the first aid class” segments to a minimum.
• Allow lots of time for socializing – the main benefit of a staff day!
• Managers and supervisors should be mingling with all staff, all day.
• The venue: Clean, bright, comfortable, lots of free parking. Does it suit your purpose?
• Use the day to praise successful staff projects, not just people who could not find another job for 25 years.

3. Involve more community leaders in supporting and funding staff days.

Presenter:

Pat Wagner has been a trainer, educator, and consultant for 40 years, having worked with clients in 48 states and Canada. She is a manager and producer at Pattern Research, Inc. Pat likes to find the essence in models of human behavior and organizational design and build effective and engaging formats for learning: face-to-face, in print, and online. She has been a poet, playwright, printer, publisher, and graphic designer, and loves books, gardens, and the arts.
