Library Public Relations on a Frazzled Shoestring Webcast

This is a 30 minute pre-recorded webcast. With our online anytime format, you will immediately receive the link to the webcast, password and the link to the webcast handout upon successful registration. You do not need any special software to view and listen, just a computer!  Since passwords are changed frequently, we suggest viewing the webcast as soon as possible after registering.

Description:

Fortunately for cash-strapped libraries, many effective advertising and promotional techniques involve little more than weekly phone calls, a bucket of paint, and renaming your existing programs. Partnerships with successful organizations can leverage your budget and impact as well.

Ten Tips:

  • Make friends with the media. Yes, we are talking brownies.
  • Focus on connecting with target audiences: Less scattered approach.
  • Recruit students to help with public relations projects
  • Create a graphic identity: same type style, colors, and logo – and use it!
  • Make sure web site is searchable by online browsers.
  • Create media events with strong photo appeal – children and animals!
  • Produce refrigerator art – things people want to hang in their kitchen.
  • Business cards for everyone!
  • Interact with people positively in social media.
  • Renaming projects and events can increase attendance by 15% or more!

Outcomes

  1. Create a current media folder (online and in print) with library facts and figures for media and events.
  2. Invite high school and college students to create press releases and media campaigns.
  3. Find out how your library users get their news and promote the library to those outlets.
  4. Better manage your social media with daily news bites: News that library users can use.
  5. Use good humor and fine art to attract positive attention to library promotions.
