Education, Encouragement, and Enrichment

The annual NCHEA Conference and Curriculum Fair (C&CF) is a tremendous opportunity for you to attend your choice of more than 40 speakers and workshops and to research curriculum options and other educational materials from a large number of vendors. The C&CF is designed to address the interests and needs of a wide spectrum of attendees, from those considering homeschooling to the veteran with senior high school students.

The registration fee funds the event as well as covering annual administrative costs and expenses to monitor legislation.

Here are a few of the many reasons to attend:
Curriculum — Nothing can compare to rooms full of homeschool curriculum that you can actually hold in your hands and evaluate. (You can’t do that on the internet.)

Answers from Vendors — Our vendors are eager to answer your questions and share their exciting materials and programs.

Savings — Actually examining the books and materials can save you from making costly mistakes. Many vendors also offer discounts during the conference.

Main Speakers — Our speakers’ messages will encourage both moms AND dads to step out in faith, to keep on with their homeschool vision, and to raise children who are successful in what truly matters.

Workshops — Many more speakers will be presenting workshops on topics vital to encouraging and equipping you for homeschool success! There will be a workshop to help with almost all of your questions! Workshop speakers are also available for individual consultation.

Professional Growth — All teachers can use more education about teaching techniques and strategies, children’s learning styles, etc.

Encouragement — Every homeschooler can use more encouragement, and we believe this year’s conference will supply an abundance.

Fellowship / Connections / Networking — There is something amazing about being around others who have the same faith, convictions, and vision as you. What a confidence booster!

Inspiration — There are moments in life when things suddenly become clear and you know exactly what God would have you to do.

Kids Conference — This very popular, two-day conference always challenges children to serve others and the Lord Jesus Christ. It is filled with drama, songs, Scripture memory, object lessons, hands-on projects, and games. Space is limited, so sign up early!

Teen Conference — There is a new topic every year. Teens enjoy two days of a being together and being challenged to live for Christ.

Graduate Recognition — What an encouragement to see so many young people who have been successfully homeschooled and are planning to do remarkable things! Children who attend often catch your vision and look forward to the day when they will be among the graduates.

Spiritual Growth — We certainly hope that you will be encouraged and challenged in your Christian faith.

Relaxation /Change of Pace /Time Off/Fun — Times of vacation from the everyday demands of life are important for your sense of well-being. We hope you will relax, have fun, and enjoy the conference!

As homeschool parents, we wield an amazing amount of power to influence our children. When we are happy and excited about our job, we bring excitement and joy to our children.

We hope you will attend the coming conference and come away with a
renewed sense of excitement and joy in the God-given privilege of teaching your children!

J. Michael SmithJ. Michael Smith
HSLDA President

Michael Smith and his wife Elizabeth, along with Michael Farris and his wife, Vicki, incorporated Home School Legal Defense Association in 1983 and were the original board members. Mike grew up in Arkansas, graduated from the University of Arkansas where he played basketball, majoring in business administration. Upon graduation, he entered the U.S. Navy and served three years before attending law school at the University of San Diego.

Mike and his family began homeschooling because their 5-year-old flunked kindergarten. This was quite a disappointment to Mike in light of the fact that he was preparing this child to be president of the United States by starting his education as early as possible. His family’s life changed drastically when he heard a radio program in 1981, which introduced him to the idea of homeschooling. When they started homeschooling, they began homeschooling one year at a time to meet the academic and social needs of their children. After spending lots of time around people like Mike Farris, he became convinced that he had been called to use his gifts and talents in the legal profession to assist homeschoolers who were being prosecuted because they didn’t hold a teacher’s certificate or satisfy the school district that they could competently teach their children.

Mike came to HSLDA full-time in 1987 and has served as president of the organization since the year 2001. The most enjoyable part of Mike’s job is when he is able to go to homeschool conferences and meet what he calls America’s greatest heroes, homeschooling moms.

Diane Kummer Diane Kummer
HSLDA High School Consultant

Diane and her husband Tom homeschooled their two children from kindergarten through 12th grade using a variety of teaching options. Both of their children went on to college, and are now well into their careers.

She joined the staff of Home School Legal Defense Association nine years ago to help develop HSLDA’s Homeschooling Thru High School program and website. As an HSLDA High School Consultant, Diane regularly speaks nationwide at homeschool conferences and presents high school symposiums where she shares from her experiences and her imperfect (but real) homeschooling days! Her practical and encouraging high school seminars provide information that inspires parents to continue teaching their teens at home with confidence.

Diane loves math and taught high school math classes for homeschooled students for many years. In her free time, she enjoys teaching ladies’ Bible studies and being involved in pro-life ministries. Graduating from the Pennsylvania State University with a degree in Business Management, she enjoyed a banking career prior to starting a family and beginning her homeschool adventure.
2016 NCHEA Kids' Conference

NCHEA Kids’ Conference is excited to present WESTWARD! Setting out to find who I am in Christ. Hold your horses and put on your boots, because we're excited to head to the wild west! This year finds us joining a daring a group on a wagon train. We will follow them as they head to their new homes out west. What awaits them?

Youth (ages 5-12) are invited to enroll in this two-day program as we engage in captivating drama, songs, Scripture memory, object lessons, hands-on projects and games.

This program should not be viewed as merely child-care. It is intended to deliver a Bible-based character message in a memorable and fun way. Since a portion of this program will involve age-integrated small groups, families may request that siblings stay together.

Ready to Give an Answer

Do you have evidences for Christianity to share? Are you ready to give an answer?

Teen Track 2016 will cover evidences from the book, "Ready to Give an Answer", that can be used to convince others:
that God, the Bible, and Christianity are true, clearly present the gospel to others, and that our faith is reasonable, logical, anbd credible.

This course seeks to strengthen the personal faith of teens and teach them to be  … "ready to give a defense to everyone who asks you a reason for the hope that in you." (I Peter 3:15)
