DONA Approved Birth Doula Training

Lorenza Holt, MPH, BCCE, BDT(DONA)

  • The significance of birth across cultures
  • The benefits of doula support
  • How to work with the mother's medical team
  • Providing comfort and emotional support during all stages of labor, including difficult labors, cesarean births and VBACs
  • How to build a trusting and meaningful relationship with mom and her family during pregnancy, labor, birth, and the first weeks postpartum
  • Supporting newborns
  • Overview of breastfeeding
  • DONA International's Code of Ethics, Standards of Practice and additional required steps to certification as a DONA Int'l Birth Doula

We want all students to complete the course feeling fully confident and prepared to provide doula support to birthing women. For this reason, I am teaching a 26 hour course over 4 full days. I believe that this structure and pace will give students time to read the manual in between sessions, continue reading the required books, refelect on what they are learning, ask questions, and prepare homework. This will help assure that all students gain a deeper understanding of the material.

This course will prepare you to be a birth doula. It will not cover the content of a childbirth education class.  Applicants are expected to come with a fundamental understanding of pregnancy, labor and birth, the associated medical vocabulary, common interventions, common complications and standard obstetrical technology.

The following prerequisites will give participants the foundation the training requires, as well as meet the requirement for certification with DONA International.

  • Read Pregnancy, Childbirth and the Newborn by Penny Simkin, et al
  • Read The Birth Partner by Penny Simkin
  • Read The Doula Book by Klaus and Kennel
  • Attend a 7 hour BACE - approved childbirth education overview workshop that teaches the fundamentals described above

Please contact us before registering if you have questions about how we can help you gain the fundamental knowledge needed to be a birth doula, as well as meet and complete the prerequisites.
