Course Abstract:
The goal of this presentation is to look at how therapists can take control of the onething that therapists can control when working with clients who have challengingpersonalities and behaviors and that is the therapists’ intervention. Speci cally thispresentation will consider how therapists can use their own hypothesis testing to workwith a challenging client presentation; those with Alcohol and other drug addictionalong with borderline personality disorder. In order to not get swept up in the emotionaldeluge and to avoid the behavioral rollercoaster that our clients often engage in, it isimportant to have a working hypothesis that underpins why we as therapists intervenethe way we do.
Course Objectives:
• Review hypothesis and treatment relationship.
• Identify the frequently cited theoretical models of addictive behavior.
• Identify personal hypothesis(es) regarding how people change.
• Describe the clinical presentation of BPD.
• Describe the overlap between AOD and BPD.
• Describe the clinical hypothesis underpinning DBT.
• Describe the steps of DBT.
• Review personal treatment approach with clients who have AOD and BPD
