Topic:
40 Years of Supply Chain Management
You Can't Make This Stuff Up!

APICS Tampa Bay invites local supply chain, operations management, transportation and logistics professionals to our Professional Development Meeting on February 9, 2016 from 5:30 to 8:00 PM at Bascom's Chop House, 3665 Ulmerton Road, Clearwater FL 33762.

Our guest speaker is Joe Kirchner, CPIM who will be speaking on the topic of 40 Years in Supply Chain Management: You Can't Make This Stuff Up! This will be a joint meeting with the Florida Gulf Coast Affiliate of the Institute for Supply Management (ISM).

The early days of Supply Chain Management presented many of the same challenges that are faced today.  The tools available in the 1970’s were crude and incomplete by today’s standards. However, Materials Management professionals got the job done to the best of their ability and companies were profitable as a result of their efforts. As time progressed, technology moved forward and business processes improved at an incredible speed.

Materials Management morphed into Supply Chain Management. MRP became MRP II, which in turn expanded to ERP. And companies still struggle to have the right product in the right quantity in the right place at the right time (at the right cost) via processes like Inventory Management, Cycle Counting, Production & Capacity Planning, Demand Planning, and Transportation & Logistics.

Join Joe Kirchner as he takes you through the challenges faced, successes and failures, and SCM improvements that supported the field of Supply Chain Management from the mid-1970’s through 2015. In addition to the APICS Body of Knowledge and available technology, the people involved in the 40+ year journey make for a fascinating and, at times, amusing presentation that validates that SCM goals and aspirations have not changed that much.
