Nomads & Nones: What The Church Can Learn From
The 'Spiritual But Not Religious'

We’ve all heard how people today are leaving the church in droves. Many of us have experienced this reality first hand. At the same time, both pollsters and people we know make us aware of a rising new demographic: those who self-identify as “Spiritual But Not Religious.” Even as they wander away from organized religion, many are still drawn to alternative practices of faith & spirituality. This class will focus on the reasons people seem to be leaving institutional Christianity, and also explore ministry practices that seem to be stemming this tide. We will go beyond this, however, to ask what new and challenging truths the church needs to learn from the Spiritual But Not Religious among us.
Facilitated by Mike Clawson, adjunct faculty instructor at Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary, Seminary of the Southwest, and Baylor University.

Listening & Receiving: A Spiritual Approach to Reading The Bible
How can the Word really penetrate our life — inviting and encouraging us to grow in our spiritual journey? The class will focus on listening and receiving — allowing ourselves to be awakened and informed by the Bible’s wisdom. This ancient approach to Scripture, known as Lectio Divina, is a different way than traditional study, interpretation, and discussion. It involves noticing how we are touched and challenged in new ways by familiar passages from Psalms and the Gospels. Facilitated by Rev. Sarah Bentley, retired pastor.

 Discovering God’s Economy
Recovery from recession across the United States is still moving slowly for large segments of the population. Families are struggling. Small business growth and job creation, two critical elements for recovery, face uncertainty and slow progress. Is there anything we can do? The UUMC Economic Justice study group leads a Bible study and discernment process on new ways to connect our faith with the economy, finance, and justice in our local community. As a group, the class will decide on an investment in a local micro-business.
Facilitated by UUMC’s Economic Justice study group.
