In Depth, Hands on Seminar on Executive Function Skills for professionals

Learn it on Saturday...Implement it Monday Morning!

360 Thinking Executive Function Program

An Advanced Training in Executive Function Interventions

This Executive Function skills training defines, demonstrates and practices executive function skill interventions with hands on activities. Proficiency in the use of executive function interventions at the basic level is assumed and in this workshop participants will learn and practice more in depth therapeutic interventions. This course is designed to help professionals bring their practice to the next level of competence and effectiveness.

Our 360 Thinking Program combines concepts that are at the core of executive functioning: situational and intention awareness, mimetic ideational information processing, time awareness and higher order thinking, which promote efficient and accurate completion of tasks.  Our model is based on facilitating the development of 6 key skills for students: initiation, transition, planning, time management, self-regulation and meta-cognition.  Students need to learn how to create a mental ‘dry run’ of several possible future scenarios as a basis for planning and monitoring task completion. As the steps of a task are envisioned, potential obstacles can be anticipated for students to problem solve and achieve independence.

In this practical strategies seminar we will briefly review the 360 Thinking Model of Executive Function Skills.  The seminar will then proceed to cover, at a more in depth level the practical aspects of assessment and treatment planning, and will go beyond the basics. Woven throughout the day will be case examples, IEP goals and how to formally and informally assess executive function skills. We will present many new and specific examples of therapeutic strategies to:

  • Increase situational intelligence and teach students how to STOP and read the Room and effectively transition between tasks
  • Teach students how to truly create mental visual imagery for the future and to perform a mental dress rehearsal to sequence actions towards a goal and hold that prospective memory in mind while they execute and self-monitor through tasks
  • develop a student’s ability to use ‘if...then’ causal thinking and self-directed talk
  • help students independently transition, initiate, plan, organize and control their behaviors for task completion.
  • show students the process of time management, complex planning, self-regulation/pacing and temporal reasoning. While clocks, calendars and schedules help students to measure clock time they do not always reflect how a student experiences time.   Improve a student’s ability to calculate the time needed to complete tasks and self-monitor the passage of hourly and daily time.  Teach students how to break down complex tasks and assignments and then plan for, organize and initiate and complete those tasks within allotted time frames
  • Improve speed of information processing
