The conference will be held at the Bob Cole Conservatory of Music (BCCM) at California State University, Long Beach (CSULB) on October 14–15, 2016 (FRI–SAT). We encourage members to register early for this enriching professional development opportunity.

KEYNOTE PRESENTERS

Marvin Blickenstaff
Past President, Frances Clark Center for Keyboard Pedagogy

Marvin Blickenstaff has directed the Program for Excellence in Piano Study (PEPS) at the New School since 1999. Blickenstaff holds degrees from the Oberlin Conservatory of Music and Indiana University where he received both academic and performance honors. He is well-known across the country and in Canada for his frequent presentations at state and national conferences. The Marvin Blickenstaff Endowment Fund was established in his honor by the Music Teachers National Association Foundation. In 2007 the online journal Piano Pedagogy Forum published tributes to Blickenstaff honoring his contribution to piano teaching in America. Also in 2007 he was named Fellow of the Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto. He was honored in 2009 with MTNA’s highest honor, the MTNA Achievement Award. Blickenstaff has served as chair of the piano departments at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and Goshen College (IN) and from 2000–2013 he was President of the Frances Clark Center for Keyboard Pedagogy.

Dennis Alexander
Composer

Since his affiliation with Alfred Publishing Company in 1986 as a composer and clinician, Dennis Alexander has earned an international reputation as one of North America's most prolific and popular composers of educational piano music for students at all levels. Professor Alexander retired from his position at the University of Montana in May 1996 where he taught piano and piano pedagogy for 24 years. Upon moving to California, he taught privately in addition to serving on the faculties of California State University, Fullerton (CSUF) and California State University, Northridge (CSUN). He currently lives in Albuquerque, NM, where he maintains an active composing and touring schedule for Alfred Publishing Company.

Graceful and appropriate choreography is important in performing — the type of motion that we employ with our arms, hands, and upper body directly affects the quality of sound that is produced and also helps to convey the drama, character, or mood of a particular piece. Mr. Alexander will demonstrate many examples from all levels of repertoire to enhance the understanding of artistic movement at the keyboard.
