What:
The 2016 Fall Conference will focus on recognizing and accommodating history, while providing resilient plans with quality design solutions. It might be possible to receive up to 9 LA CES™ approved credits. Leaders in resiliency and SITES are among the talented speakers who will be with us on Saturday.

The VA ASLA 2016 Professional and Student Awards Banquet will wrap up our conference Saturday night. All Saturday events will be held at the Paradise Ocean Club at Fort Monroe. We look forward to seeing you in Hampton September 16 -17, 2016.

Events and Fees:

Friday Tours: (All tours have been approved for LA CES™)
(You may only sign up for ONE tour as they are happening at the same time)

(1:00pm-4:30pm)

  • "Tour of Hampton - New Developments" (tour by van/shuttle) -  $50 members, $70 non-members 
    Will demonstrate how a mature, built out city is responding to the risk of sea level rise while maintainig its historical values;
    Will describe our collaboration and utilization of the "Dutch Dialogue" methodology;
    Will describe Hampton's process to change mindsets from "risk" to "opportunity"
  • "The Chesapeake Bay and Harbor Tour including the Hampton River" (boat tour) - THIS TOUR IS SOLD OUT!
    This  harbor tour will depart from historic Fort Monroe and proceed to the Hampton River and will include sights such as Hampton University and Blackbeard's Point. This tour will include Old Point Comfort Lighthouse and a guided walking tour and discussion of the Civil War island fortress Fort Wool. 
  • "Fort Monroe by Saddle: A Two-Wheel Rolling Tour Along Streets, Shores and a Seawall" (bike tour) - $50 members, $70 non-members
    This session will present the historical use and development of old Point Comfort through a sitewide bicycle tour. The site's natural and strategic settings are context for use over more than 400 year. Cyclists will be immersed in this site at a scale that allows for movement in and through a landscape that includes the designed stone fort central to America's coast defense system, a travel destination for generations of visitors, series of installation improvement and redevelopment campaigns, and the increments of change over time. 
  • "A guided Tour by Foot of the Casemate Museum and the Environs of the Old Stone Fort" (walking tour) - $50 members, $70 non-members
    During this two-hour tour, participants will explore the Casemate Museum and grounds within the fort at Fort Monroe. Highlights will include museum exhibits, the Flagstaff Bastion, an archaeological dig site, and Old Quarters #1.
  • "Old Point Comfort: The Past, Present and Future...As Seen From the Water!" (kayak tour) - $50 members, $70 non-membersTHIS TOUR IS SOLD OUT!
    Participants will enter Mill Creek at Old Point Comfort via the new fully accessible kayak launch at Fort Monroe and discuss modern day designs for better public water access. The tour guide will present the history and significance of Captain John Smith's travels in the region and the impact the Captain John Smith Trail will have on getting people onto the historic waters of the region. Participants will view first-hand the impact of "armored shoreline" improvements and observe the resiliency of coastal grasses as they try to survive in the harshly improvised area along the inner coast of Mill Creek. The tour guide will lead a discussion on property improvements that expand into state owned bottom lands and the legal implications of unimproved shoreline expansion projects.

Saturday Education Sessions: Early Bird Rate: $150 members, $175 non-members, $25 students / Regular Rate: $195 members, $225 non-members, $30 students. Includes six education sessions, continental breakfast, beverage breaks, lunch, Saturday reception and dinner.

  • 8:30am - 9:30am: ”The Adaptive Reuse of Historic Military Sites into Mixed Use Communities" with Glenn Odor, FASLA (approved for 1 hour of LA CES™)
  • 9:30am - 10:30am: “Making the Most of the Coast" with Ronald and Carrie Quinn (approved for 1 hour of LA CES™)
  • 11:00am - 12:00pm: “Resiliency and the 21sy Century Learning Environment" with Tim Cole (approved for 1 hour of LA CES™)
  • 12:30pm - 1:30pm: “Virginia's Road to Resiliency" with Paul B. Olsen, P.E. (approved for 1 hour of LA CES™)
  • 1:30pm - 2:30pm: “Introduction to SITESv2 and the Integration with GSA" with Hunter Beckham, FASLA, PLA and Christian Gabriel, RLA, ASLA (approved for 1 hour of LA CES™)
  • 3:00pm - 4:00pm: “ASLA: Climate Change and Resilient Futures" with Vaughn B. Rinner, FASLA(approved for 1 hour of LA CES™)

Saturday Virginia ASLA Awards Reception and Banquet (included with conference registration):
$50 members, $60 non-members, $40 students. Includes admittance to pre-reception, awards program, and dinner. Join your colleagues for an evening celebrating great Virginia Landscape Architecture.
 

LA CES:
LA CES™ credit has been applied for this conference.  Each of the Saturday Education sessions has been approved for one (1) LA CES™ hour.  The Friday sessions are listed here:
