Welcome to the 4th National Safe and Together Symposium. After an overwhelming success from 2015, we are excited to announce that this year's symposium will continue to focus on children exposed to domestic violence. It is an honor to feature international experts, such as Prof. Cathy Humphreys from the University of Melbourne, Ruby White Starr from Casa de Esperanza, representatives from the Adult Children Exposed to Domestic Violence (ACE-DV) Leadership Forum and other professionals continuing to advance toward Domestic Violence Proficient practices and systems.

Held in Orlando, FL at the Wyndham Grand Bonnet Creek hotel, we know this year's symposium will be a wonderful opportunity to learn, share ideas and develop collaborative opportunities while enjoying all Orlando has to offer.

  • Practice and policy-specific training about the intersection of domestic violence and child maltraetment
  • How the Safe and Together™ model can enhance collaboration in communities where co-located domestic violence advocates or specialists work inside child welfare agencies
  • National experts on children exposed to violence
  • Opporunities to discuss harm, resilience and healing for children
  • Using a perpetrator pattern-based approach to understanding child safety

Pre-Symposium Workshop (Choose one full day training):

  • The Safe and Together Model: This introductory course will provide an overview of the model's Principles, Critical Components and some basic practice skills around perpetrator pattern-based risk assessment, case mapping and impact on children. This full-day course is recomended for anyone new to the Safe & Together model.
  • Enhancing Advocacy: Improving outcomes for survivors and their children invoved in the child welfare system has been part of the ongoing mission for domestic violence advocates. This full-day training will highlight some key topics from the Advocacy Institute, such as shared language with child welfare, pivoting and mapping survivors strengths. Anyone is welcome.
  • Interviewing Perpetrators to Promote Child Safety: This advanced full-day training will cover how a foundation of a perpetrator pattern-based, behavior focused, gender responsive, non-judgmental approach can be effective when working with domestic violence perpetrators from all different backgrounds. Those attending are recommended to have had some exposure to the Safe & Together Model previously.

The reference number for this conference is OVW-2017-MU-001. This number must be used by grantees when requesting approval via a GAN or in their “memo to the file”.  The following OVW programs have conditionally approved their grantees to attend this conference: Campus, CLSSP, Consolidated Youth, Rural, State Coalition and Transitional Housing.

Grantees are required to contact their OVW program specialist to get approval specific to their award and to ensure that a Grant Adjustment Notice (GAN) is issued. A GAN must be completed before grantees commit or expend any funds related to attending this conference.

Grantees from both the Justice for Families (JFF) and STOP programs may be invited to attend this conference and do not have to contact their program manager for prior approval. However, grantees from the JFF program cannot send more than 2 participants.
