Introducing OMA's 1st Annual Professional Development Series

This event is an all-day opportunity to learn about and recognize our own implicit biases. We carry personal bias with us, even when we fervently believe we are not doing so, and no matter our profession.

The 1st workshop of the OMA Professional Development Series 2016 is an unusual opportunity to learn about, discuss, understand, and practice dealing with implicit bias, in ourselves and our workplaces. We will present a case study where implicit bias became very real, very fast, and very up close and personal for two individuals.

To augment our case study, we will have speakers and panel discussions that will educate us on what characterizes implicit bias, where it comes from, its manifestations, and then in small groups we will create safe spaces for discussion and exploration of our own biases. The focus will be on racial bias because of its prevalence, importance and denial, in our national police / community relations across this country.

Together we will...

  • create an atmosphere of safety and trust allowing for deep exploration of implicit bias;
  • more fully recognize unconscious assumptions, fears, and prejudices in talking about race;
  • deepen our understanding of different perspectives and experience by community building through shared personal stories and experiences;
  • build on new and meaningful ways to engage during mediations and other professional duties around challenging issues.

Further details to follow regarding specific speakers.
