About the Event

 

Conference Goal and Description
The purpose of this educational activity is to enable the learner to gain insight into the role which anxiety and mood disorders can play in the perinatal experience as well as the latest techniques for screening and treatment. The seminar will focus on supporting parents who have a baby in the NICU and/or experience a perinatal loss, and discuss regional mental health support services available to women. This seminar will also highlight the importance of a father's emotional wellbeing and the transition to fatherhood. 

Objectives
 As a result of attending this continuing education program,
 participants will be able to:

  • Discuss current evidence on depressive symptoms and anxiety in high risk mothers of infants and toddlers.
  • Outline current depressive symptoms and anxiety assessment processes and devices.
  • List three strategies that facilitate parenting in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU).
  • Identify effective and ineffective coping mechanisms and support strategies for NICU families.
  • Identify measurable outcomes in relation to the implementation of a Family Support Program in the NICU.
  • Identify key emotional issues in recurrent pregnancy loss.
  • Summarize different approaches to providing support and counseling.
  • Integrate the current research findings about recurrent loss into clinical practices.
  • Delineate the services offered by the Emotional Health Phone Support Program.
  • Discuss the importance of identification of untreated depression and or anxiety in pregnancy.
  • Outline three non-pharmacological treatment / adjunct treatment options for antenatal depression and / or anxiety.
  • Review pharmacological treatment options for antenatal deperssion and / or anxiety.
  • Describe key psychosocial elements in the transition to fatherhood and men's perinatal mental health.
  • Cite examples of how fatherhood involvement impacts the family system.
  • List evidence-based approaches to better engage fathers with perinatal services, with their children and with their partners during pregnancy and early parenthood.
  • Discuss the importance of peer support recovery for women experiencing perinatal mood and anxiety disorders.
  • Describe Postpartum Progress' Warrior Mom Ambassador initiative.
