9:00 a - 9:30 a            Registration Open and Continental Breakfast (Cottonwood Room)

9:30 a – 10:30 a          Community Involvement and Advocacy – Pam Smith, RDH and Tanya Dorf Brunner

What does it mean and why is it important? Advocacy is a concept that many dental and health care providers do not understand well and how it can impact their own practices. Simply by choosing to go into the dental care field, you decided to be a dental health advocate.  Learn the basics of advocacy in your practice and in your community.

10:45 a - 11:45 a         New Dentist Panel – Jill Jenkins, DDS; Nathan Schmidt, DDS

The dentists will provide information on topics such as, “managing student debt”, “I wish I would have…(i.e. taken more business classes, not gotten a credit card)”, “realistic expectations of a newly practicing dentist”, and other things that they feel would help pre-dental students prepare for careers in dentistry, from the new dentist perspective. There will be plenty of time for Q & A.

    1. Dr. Mark Herzog will present information about the Kansas Mission of Mercy and Kansas Dental Charitable Foundation.
    2. Kevin will present information to the students about the governance of the American Dental Association and the Kansas Dental Association. He will explain the similarities and differences in the local, state, and national levels of ADA membership.
    3. Tanya Dorf Brunner, Executive Director of Oral Health Kansas (OHK), will discuss that organization’s role in state dental advocacy and the programs that OHK provides to dentists and the public.
    4. Dr. Charles Squire, Vice President of the Kansas Dental Board, will discuss will discuss the KDB, for example, the licensing process, continuing education, and the Dental Practice Act.
