The Matriarchal Leadership Style or Nurturing Leadership Style is the least known of the styles as these leaders tend to stall in their career trajectory because they focus more on people than on business. Driven by the need to be supportive and helpful, they approach business insisting on collaboration and cooperation.The dysfunctional behavior of the Matriarchal Leadership Style is driven by their pervasive need to have everyone on the same page to ward off feelings of anxiety and uncertainty that come from being disconnected from others. They insist on cohesive group functioning and decision making to meet their social needs and need for connection, slowing down productivity and getting in the way of individual efforts. 

This type of leader is most effective in situations where there is a need to build employee bench strength through hands-on learning and involvement. It also helps with the reduction of employee stress and frustration in the workplace. 

However, the downside of the Matriarchal Leadership Style is that they negate the value of individuality, decisiveness, competitiveness, goal driven behavior and are overly concerned with the feelings of employees, putting the needs of people before the needs of the business. 

In order for Matriarchal Leaders to develop, they have to be willing to learn to tolerate disharmony and support independent thinking and decision making. Building tolerance to their emotions and those of others are critical to their long-term success as leaders.
