Making Sources Primary: Integrating Resources from the Library of Congress into Your Classroom

The Teaching with Primary Sources Program at DePaul University connects Chicagoland teachers with primary sources—the “raw materials of history.” In this workshop, participants will learn how to access the millions of free digitized resources at the Library of Congress, as well as integrate them into activities, lessons, and units that promote critical thinking, inquiry-­based learning, and state and Common Core curriculum alignment.

Day 2

Democratizing the DBQ: Helping ALL Students with Evidence-based Writing and Close Reading Skills

For over a decade, The DBQ Project has promoted rigorous reading and writing instruction for all students, not just those in advanced classes. In this highly interactive workshop, participants will learn strategies for engaging students in close reading, and will be introduced to The DBQ Project’s method for scaffolding the writing process.The content focus of the workshop will be from The DBQ Project's Mini-Qs in Civics teacher resource binder.

Participants will receive a variety of printed and digital materials from both organizations, including a sample unit from the DBQ Project, as well as 10 CPDUs (participants must attend both sessions to receive CPDUs). Lunch will be provided on both days.  Social Studies teachers of grades 4-­12 are encouraged to attend
