Next Steps into Adulthood
A workshop and resource fair to help for young adults on the autism spectrum
- and their families- prepare for adulthood

Saturday, May 7th, 9 AM- 4 PM

About this workshop:
The transition from adolescence into adulthood can be an exciting, yet daunting time for young adults with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and for their families.

Preparing for adulthood may involve entering a new environment, handling different social situations and responsibilities, and adapting to changes in a comfortable routine. Individuals with ASD and those who support them face decisions and logistical planning that affect every aspect of life: healthcare, domestic life, finances, relationships, education, and employment or alternative roles in the community. ASD is a life-long disability that requires a life-time plan.

The transition to adulthood may be a challenging one, but it can also usher in new opportunities for self-advocacy and independence. Young adults can consider their own interests and make choices about whether to continue their education or begin a career, and how to become part of their community. With support and careful planning, many individuals with autism can successfully transition into adulthood and lead fulfilling lives.

CAR is presenting a one-day workshop and resource fair for individuals with autism, their family members and support professionals where experts in autism, psychology, behavior, education, law, health care and social work will share ideas, resources, and tools to help pave the road to a more independent adult life. Attendees wll participate in small-group discussions related to navigating ASD as an adult.
