SPLG Annual Summer Conference 2016 

The Scottish Public Law Group's eighth Annual Summer Conference is taking place on Monday 13 June 2016 at the Roxburghe Hotel, 38 Charlotte Square, Edinburgh.

The conference will cover a variety of public law topics including judicial review, protective expensive orders, law-making in the Scottish Parliament, human rights and EU law updates, inlcuding constitutional and domestic law implications of a yes/no outcome in the forthcoming referendum.

After an opening address from the Advocate General for Scotland, the conference will comprise of 4 sessions.

Public Law Update
This session will be chaired by Lady Wolffe (Senator of the College of Justice). The first part will be a case law update, with a Scottish update from Christine O'Neill (Chairman at Brodies LLP) and an update on developments beyond Scotland by Richard Clayton QC (4-5 Gray's Inn Sq). The second part of this session will be a procedural update with a discussion of the new judicial review rules by Andrew Webster (Advocate) followed by protective expenses orders by Professor Tom Mullen (University of Glasgow).

Law-making in the Scottish Parliament
This session will be chaired by Lynda Towers (former solicitor to the Scottish Parliament).  Andy Beattie (Chief Parliamentary Counsel) will present on legislative drafting and Professor Paul Cairney (University of Stirling) will give a perspective on law-making at Holyrood.

Human Rights Developments
This session will be chaired by Bruce Adamson (Scottish Human Rights Commision). Anna Poole QC (Advocate) will cover human rights issues in Scots Law and Dr Katie Boyle (University of Roehampton) will provide an update on human rights developments elsewhere.

EU Law and European Referendum
This final session will be chaired by Professor Aileen McHarg (University of Strathclyde). This session will begin with an EU case law update from Kenneth Campbell QC. Professor Stephen Tierney (University of Edinburgh) will then discuss whether the Referendum can be democratic, followed by Dr Tobias Lock (University of Edinburgh) on the legal implications of Brexit.

The event will be eligible for 6 hours CPD. Registration is from 9am - 9.25am. Lunch is provided from 1 -2pm. The conference will close at 5pm and will be followed by a drinks reception.
