High School Retreat at Camp DeWolfe

Just a friendly reminder that we have a wonderful program planned for the high school retreat at Camp DeWolfe from April 29-May.  Members of the Youth Commission created the theme and content for the retreat based on issues most relevant to teens.   The theme is: “IDENTITY:  Who do you say I am?” (Mark 8:29)   All 9th-12th graders are invited to come with their adult chaperones to Camp DeWolfe for a weekend to explore who you are and who you might become.

Experience the following activities:

-Icebreakers
-Teambuilding games
-Outdoor challenges and sports
-Ted talks
-Small and big group discussions
-Creating Icons
-Worship

Explore the following types of identity as well as others:

-Ability
-Age
-Ethnicity
-Gender
-Race
-Religion
-Sexual Orientation
-Socio-Economic Status/Class

We will have a special guest for the high school retreat!

“Anglican Priest and artist  Regan O'Callaghan has been invited by the Diocese of Long Island and the Mercer School of Theology to be artist in residence for the next 3 months.  Regan has over the past 16 years developed an art ministry in the Diocese of London, U.K. where he is based.   This ministry includes leading religious icon writing workshops, painting and sculpture workshops in parishes, schools and other institutions including the Soane Museum, London.    He works extensively in schools and also regularly works with the education departments at Saint Paul's Cathedral and Westminster Abbey leading art and religious education projects.   This ministry also leads him further afield finding Regan in parishes around the U.K and  overseas. This includes an art project in St James Church, in Oakland, California, an art residency in the Diocese of Niagara, Canada, an icon project in Ibillin, Israel and an art residency in St Paul’s Cathedral Melbourne, Australia later this year.

The main focus of Regan’s time in Long Island is to share the tradition of icon writing.  Icon writing or painting is described not so much as an art but as a spiritual discipline.    Regan will be running a number of workshops exploring not only the technique of icon writing but also prayer and the theology and history of orthodox icons.   These classes will be open to all people whatever their artistic capabilities.”   We are thrilled to have him join us for the high school retreat!

A Word About Scholarships:

  • It is our goal that no child, youth, college student, or young adult miss an event because of financial reasons.
  • We offer some scholarship assistance for all of our programs. We raise funds for this purpose.
  • Ideally we ask the family to pay 1/3, the parish 1/3, and diocesan scholarship funds 1/3. We work with congregations to make sure their young people have funding to attend events and camps.
