From Family Farm to City Chic
2538 Glacier Dr.
Wichita, KS  67215

Are you in the city or in the country? With Pawnee Prairie Park on one side, a hedge-lined sprawling landscape with rusty, antique farm equipment scattered throughout, you might guess “country.” Nope. You’re in the city. However, Vergil and Kay Esau loved their family farm at Whitewater, Kansas so much, they brought pieces of it to their city home. The wildlife showed up, too. Deer from the Park prefer to dine on the Esau’s savory landscape plantings, prompting them to find effective ways to encourage the deer to dine elsewhere.

A Cottage Garden to Feed Your Senses
10126 Westport Ct.
Wichita, KS  67212

Any time you’re in a garden containing fruits, flowers, veggies and herbs, you are in a cottage garden. Seeing the new shed in a corner of the Bonifield’s garden confirms it. The shed is aptly named, “A Garden Cottage.” Plan to stay a long time because you’ll see how multiple fruit trees and vegetable plots meld beautifully with a stunning display of flowers, shrubs, lawn, outdoor living areas and art. In this garden, Gwynne, a Sedgwick County Extension Master Gardener Volunteer, will show you how you can enjoy the view and have fruits and veggies, too.

Kid-sized Garden for Growing Minds
7007 W. 12th St. North
Wichita, KS  67212

You definitely will want to be a kid again after you see this garden. How often can a grownup step through a clematis-draped arbor to follow a hopscotch trail through zinnias, elephant ears, gazing balls, and windmills?  Or hide in a fern-filled hidey-hole? Or, watch a pumpkin seed sprout for the first time? The kids who attend Kreative Kids Preschool are surrounded by this patch of nature and get to learn about gardening in an era when many kids think carrots grow in a plastic grocery bag. In this garden, you get to learn creative, kid-friendly ideas for your own garden.

Bird’s Eye View of a Shady Retreat
2905 N. Wild Rose Ct.
Wichita, KS  67205

Only one thing makes a cool, quiet, shady retreat better:  Taking it all in with a bird’s eye view from a tall deck. This approach lets you immerse yourself into a gorgeous shade garden that shouts peace with a whisper. An inviting hammock, a romantic “lover’s settee,” bubbling fountains, a relaxing hot tub, angels all around … these additions to the garden are so soothing, you may find yourself wanting to claim the hammock and take a nap. But you won’t because you’ll be so eager to see everything that makes this shade garden so successful.

Mighty Oaks and Memories
3382 Riverdale Road
Wichita, KS  67204

The Johnson family created 43 years of memories in this garden and a magnificent, mighty oak tree was often a part of them. Twinkling lights in the tree illuminated a grandson’s recent wedding. On summer nights, children roasted marshmallows on the patio under the oak. In winter, they flooded the patio for ice-skating. Other than memories, what makes this stately tree so special? Careful pruning. Once you see the splendid, open canopy of leaves and giant limbs, this tree will be in your memory.

From Rookie to Results: A Garden of Growth
4317 Eagle Lake Drive
Bel Aire, KS  67220

The bare dirt around Lois Powell’s newly constructed home was a blank slate 27 years ago, but Lois’ mind was anything but blank. Even though she was a rookie gardener, her mind was fertile with ideas to turn clay soil into a spectacular landscape filled with incredible combinations of annuals, perennials, sculptures, and surprises. Lois planted what she liked, created layouts that made her feel good and learned a lot along the way. Strolling through this garden, you can get a crash course on everything this enthusiastic, colorful gardener learned to advance from a rookie to a gardener with results.

A Kansas Garden for Pollinators
6409 Abbotsford
Wichita, KS  67206

Made in Kansas by a Kansas native for a Kansas climate: That’s a short way to sum up this garden. However, while not every plant in this garden has roots that originated in Kansas as Joan did, their blooms definitely attract pollinating bees and butterflies that fill the Kansas air. A Sedgwick County Extension Master Gardener Volunteer, Joan provides a nectar- and pollen-producing, hearty, colorful garden that tolerates Kansas weather extremes and pleases its human visitors as much as it does the winged ones.

No Lawn Needed…Just Abundant Color
10 Hawthorne
Wichita, KS  67206

Mowed fescue lawns have never seemed so mundane, and an eclectic, casual, grassless landscape has never looked as good as in this garden. In this lawn-free landscape you will discover myriad plant selections rivaling those in a garden center but with all the personality of a homegrown garden. The only grasses you’ll see here are flowing, ornamental grasses. Among flowers. And shrubs. And trees. Color exploding throughout a variety of plants and artistic embellishments is all you need to be totally in love with this garden.
