Sovereign Health Group presents
Developing a Treatment Approach: Alcohol / Other Drug Addictions (AOD) and Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD)

Thursday, May 5, 2016 | 6:00 p.m.–7:30 p.m.

Anthony Mele

The goal of this presentation is to look at the therapist’s intervention. Specifically, this presentation will consider how we as therapists can use our own hypothesis testing to work with a challenging client presentation: those with alcohol andother drug addictions, along with Borderline Personality Disorder. In order to avoid getting swept up in the emotional overflow and the behavioral rollercoaster that our clients often engage in, it is important to have a working hypothesis that underpins why we intervene the way we do.

 Course Objectives:

  • Review hypothesis and treatment relationships.
  • Identify the frequently cited theoretical models of addictive behavior.
  • Identify personal hypotheses regarding how people change.
  • Describe the clinical presentation of BPD.
  • Describe the overlap between AOD and BPD.
  • Describe the clinical hypothesis underpinning Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT).
  • Describe the steps of DBT.
  • Review personal treatment approach with clients who have AOD and BPD.
