 The Balancing Act: Population Health and Security

As healthcare organizations across the continuum of care progress toward interoperability goals to support population health, and the volume of patient data collected through new systems and innovative bio devices increases, the security of that data as it passes through new avenues and byways has become an undeniable imperative.  Balancing the availability and accessibility of data with the multiple levels of protection necessary is tricky.  Attend the HIMSS Oregon Annual Spring Conference to hear how national and local organizations are weighing the needs of both sides and developing solutions to achieve this balance.

• David Schoolcraft and Lee Kuo, Attorneys, Ogden Murphy Wallace.  The good news: a cyber risk policy was in place when a data breach occurred and the insurer funded a $4.125 million settlement in the class action lawsuit that followed. The bad news: the insurer then sued the hospital for the full $4.125 million plus attorneys' fees. This session will cover key lessons to be learned from this recent case for both provider organizations and health information technology companies.

Population Health Sessions:

The Population Health sessions will include a discussion of how one local company has culled a 98% participation rate of employees utilizing biometric screenings and correlating that with health assessment data; a session that explores the integration of social determinants of health into a regional CCO and HIE; and a session that looks at the development and utilization status of financial and clinical data by an Oregon based provider/payer run enterprise.

Lunch Table Topic Discussions:

Attendees will have the option at lunch to participate in table topics led by a facilitator.  The goal is to foster a discussion of key Healthcare IT topics to enable attendees to share experiences and identify tactics they can incorporate in their job.  Topics will include:  patient engagement, care coordination, telehealth, data security, data center management, data analytics, interoperability, information exchange, mobile device management and optimizing EMRs.

CE Hours:

This event has been approved for up to 6 hours in continuing education (CE) hours for use in fulfilling the continuing education requirements of the Certified Professional in Healthcare Management Systems (CPHIMS) and Certified Associate in Healthcare Information and Management Systems (CAHIMS).
