Writing from the art of the FotoFest Biennial with Writespace

Ever wondered how visual artists work, or are you a visual artist excited by the relationship between writing and art? In this workshop we will explore the magical kinship between art and writing.

The workshop will take place in Silver Street Studio’s extensive gallery, featuring artwork that is part of FotoFest's 2016 Biennial, CHANGING CIRCUMSTANCES.

Featured art address explores humanity's relationship to the natural world and our impacts upon the planet. Scenes of majestic natural beauty are exhibted along side more critical views of our culture's impact on the landscape creating an exhibition rich with visual material.

Led by poet and artist Mary Wemple, this workshop will consist of ekphrastic writing prompts (in other words, writing inspired by art), as well as time for writers to explore the exhibit and begin poems, essays, and scenes on their own.The exercises we share are intended to help spark new ideas, but they are also adaptable to works-in-progress, so feel free to come without a particular goal or with the goal of reconnecting with a current project.

About workshop leader:

Mary Wemple is a poet, artist and creator of Words & Art, a reading series and workshop series inspired by the installations at Rice University Art Gallery.  She holds degrees in English and Studio Art from the University of Houston. Her poetry has been published in Austin International Poetry Fest, Houston Poetry Fest Anthology in 2005, 2009 and 2015, Harbinger Asylum, Spiky Palm and she was featured in the 2014 Words Around Town! poetry tour lineup.  Her art work has been shown at the Inman Gallery, DiverseWorks, the Blaffer Art Museum, the Jung Center, Archway Gallery, Avis Frank Gallery and she has co-organized a show at Hardy Nance Studios.

Please bring a journal and a favorite writing instrument, as inspiration is meant to strike.

Eager to share your work? Join Writespace's All-Genre Open Mic after the workshop. Read your work aloud and receive feedback, if you so desire. (More info about the Open Mic:  https://www.facebook.com/events/1707569602857872/)
