This year we will discuss The Golden Bowl
By Henry James
Set in England, The Golden Bowl is Henry James's highly charged exploration of adultery, jealousy, and possession that continues and challenges James's characteristic exploration of the battle between American innocence and European experience. Maggie Verver, a young American heiress, and her widowed father, Adam, lead a life of wealth and refinement in London. They are both getting married: Maggie to Prince Amerigo, an impoverished Italian aristocrat, and Adam to the beautiful but penniless Charlotte Stant. But both father and daughter are unaware that their new conquests share a secret - one for which all concerned must pay the price. This story completes what critics have called the "major phase" of James’s career.
"One of the greatest pieces of fiction ever written"--- A. N. Wilson
"A wonderfully luminous drama"--- Gore Vidal
On Saturday we will hear our guest speaker, Susan E. Gunter: Author, Editor, Phogotographer, and Professor Emeritus of English at Westminster College in Salt Lake City. She is the editor of two volumes of the letters of Henry James and the author of Alice in Jamesland, the first biography of Alice Howe Gibbens James, wife of the psychologist and philosopher William James, and sister-in-law of novelist Henry James.
We will use the Penguin Classics edition of The Golden Bowl by Henry Adams. ISBN: 978-0-14-144127-6 Please purchase only this edition from your bookseller.
