Between the head and the feet of any given person is a billion miles of unexplored wilderness - Gabrielle Roth

OlyWaves is elated to announce its 12th Annual Tribal Gathering, July 29-31, 2016. Every Tribal Gathering has a unique theme and movement teachers from 5Rhythms, Soul Motion, and Open Floor, each offering a session, an exploration, of our shared theme. This year's theme, The Wilderness Within, is directly inspired by Gabrielle Roth, the dancing Shaman who birthed Conscious and Embodied dance as we know it in the world today.

The dancing path is a journey of healing. It is also a journey of joy and connection. It breaks us open and lifts us up. It reveals the depths of the soul and the limitless expanse of spirit. It brings us back to the moment, where time and again we find rest and peace in the simple yet profound fullness of our own being.

Set right in the heart of summer, the weekend also features a fabulous catered outdoor dinner, and embodied dancers, new friends and old, from around the globe. It is a great time for connecting and reconnecting with self and with community. This mid summer celebration takes place in beautiful Olympia Washington. There are no prerequisites for this event and you are very welcome whether you are brand new or a seasoned dancer.

This Year's Faculty

Cynthia Kennedy      is a mother, a dancer, and a passionate lover of life, but she is best known as a deep and powerful teacher – of leadership, of writing, and of the Open Floor movement meditation practice. She was originally trained by Gabrielle Roth and has been teaching movement as a tool of transformation since 2007. She has been on the faculty at The Evergreen State College in Olympia, Washington since 1998 where her main areas of focus are embodied leadership, sustainability and consciousness studies.  Together, with other movement teachers from around the world, she is a Founding Member of both the International Conscious Movement Teachers Association and Open Floor International.  With humor, wisdom, compassion and intelligence, she catalyzes change and helps people fall in love with themselves, guiding them on the great adventure of discovering their true selves.

Chantell Foss            I'm a teacher of Gabrielle Roth's 5Rhythms and a Hatha yoga teacher, as well as a full-time mama and a former university lecturer and museum/art gallery educator. Learning and healing through moving, embodied awareness has revolutionized and re-birthed me.  I thought my lostness and exhaustion might bind me and trip me, the first time I stepped into the 5Rhythms.  Instead, the practice flicked into motion an ongoing process of waking me up and sobering me, while unleashing and relaxing me, too. Having stumbled into the 5Rhythms as a wildly liberating way to abide with life and adjust my dynamics with this world, I now relate to them as powerful tools that we can put in our own hands, over and over, quite simply.  For me, their radical potential lives in their astounding naturalness and practicality.  It's an honour and a solace to serve as a patch of loving ground and a pair of arms - to hold clear a space for others to enter this meditation that moves. Peter Yanz                  Peter is a lifelong lover of nature, and loves moving his body as a piece of that wild earth. He completed training as a teacher of 5Rhythms (TM) in 2011, and since summer 2015 has been focusing his teaching on Open Floor movement. He is passionate about helping others learn to live more fully into themselves through movement and connection. There is nothing like watching others make the kinds of life-changing discoveries on the dance floor that have so enriched his own life. He is apprenticing with Open Floor founder Andrea Juhan to teach Libido Fundamentals, bringing conscious work with sexuality into movement practice. Peter’s teaching style is gentle, rooted and expansive, allowing people to approach their edges with courage and calm.

Molly Gilmore        Molly has been dancing all her life and studying embodied dance practices for the past 13 years, beginning when she moved to Olympia and met Amara Pagano. She creates safe space for self-expression and cultivates the wider view on and off the dance floor. Her presence, eclectic music and intuitive guidance invite you to be yourself, dive deep and play in sacred space.

Shawn Swanson               A certified 5Rhythms teacher, Shawn has spent much of his life exploring the present moment through movement and athletics. In 1993 Shawn began his study of meditation, breath work and other forms of self-inquiry. Dance had been a love of his since his first middle school ball, and over the years Shawn could feel some greater possibility lurking just out of reach while dancing. This possibility became a rich reality when he discovered the 5Rhythms in the year 2000.
