 Lessons from Milwaukee’s Industrial Heritage

Part One: On the Banks of the Milwaukee River

This month Tom Fehring, the chairman of ASME’s history and heritage committee, will make a presentation on Milwaukee’s industrial heritage.  Tom has been researching the mechanical engineering accomplishments of Milwaukee-area companies since 1980 and has recently begun writing a book on the subject.

The Magnificent Machines of Milwaukee, and the engineers who created them,” is expected to be published later this year. Tom will provide a preview of the book by discussing the industries that began along the banks of the Milwaukee River. He will talk about engineering accomplishments of Lee’s Fire Arms Company, the Sholes & Glidden ‘Type Writer,’ Decker & Seville’s ‘Reliance Works’ (which became the E.P. Allis Company and eventually Allis Chalmers), Christensen Engineering (which became the National Electric Company), and Globe Union (now part of Johnson Controls). This far ranging presentation will start with a breach-loading rifle and end with the development of the microchip!
