Trainer:  Don Meyer

Don Meyer is the director of the Kindering Center’s Sibling Support Project.  Don is probably best known for creating Sibshops, lively programs just for young brothers and sisters of kids with special needs.  Currently, there are over 400 Sibshops in eight countries.  Don also created SibTeen, Sib20, and SibNet – online communities that provide thousands of siblings from around the world with opportunities to connect with their peers.  Among his seven books are Views from Our Shoes, The Sibling Survival Guide, Sibling Slam Book, and Sibshops: Workshops for siblings of children with special needs.  He has presented on sibling issues in every state, most Canadian provinces, and in 11 countries.

Sibshops give brothers and sisters of a person with disabilities an opportunity to obtain peer support and education through recreation.  For the people who attend them and the energetic people who run them, Sibshops are best described as events.  Sibshops are lively, pedal-to-the-metal celebrations of the many contributions made by brothers and sisters of children with special needs.  Sibshops acknowledge that being the brother or sister of a person with special needs is for some a good thing, others a not-so-good thing, and for many somewhere in between.  They reflect a belief that brothers and sisters have much to offer one another, if given a chance.

Sibshops are for siblings (ages 8-13) of kids with disabilities.  Facilitators can be service providers, family members, or others.  Participants will learn what to do about the concerns often experienced by brothers and sisters such as peer issues, resentment, loss, and concerns about the future; how to increase the unique opportunities experienced by siblings including compassion, advocacy, insight, and tolerance; strategies to decrease siblings’ concerns; how to help agencies provide “sibling-friendly” services; and how to plan and run Sibshops.

The two main goals of the training is 1) to train new Sibshop facilitators and administrators to run local Sibshops and 2) to educate parents, service providers, and others about sibling ever-changing issues across the lifespan.
