Pest Management for Gardeners

Join us for a stroll through the vegetable gardens with Sue Scheufele from the UMass Extension Vegetable Program. We will learn to identify common insect and disease pests, and the damage they can cause to vegetable and herb plants. We will discuss organic management strategies that are available to home gardeners including use of mulches, row covers, bio-based pesticides and more. If time allows we will also demonstrate how to take soil samples, interpret test results, and properly amend soils to improve their structure and maintain plant health. There will be plenty of opportunity to get all your vegetable gardening questions answered and share your experiences with other gardeners.

Sue Scheufele is an extension educator with UMass Extension's Vegetable Program. Sue enjoys working with commercial vegetable growers across Massachusetts, helping to find innovative ways to manage crop and pest issues. She also conducts pest management research at the UMass Experiment Station and enjoys getting to work out in the field, growing crops of her own, and finding new tools to control pests sustainably. She holds a Master's degree in plant pathology from Cornell University, where she focused her studies on sustainable disease management in vegetable systems.
