06-08-16 Real-Time Molecular Measurements in the Living Body

Our June Presentation:
Counting molecules, dodging blood cells: We can revolutionize our understanding of health and our ability to detect and treat diseases through technology that can track in vivo levels of drugs, metabolites, and biomarkers continuously and in real-time. Therapies guided by patient-specific, real-time pharmacokinetics will open a new dimension of personalized medicine. Dr. Plaxco's research group has pioneered a "biology-inspired" electrochemical approach to monitor specific molecules with continuous, real-time measurements directly in the body.
Our Speaker:
Professor Kevin Plaxco has a shared appointment between UCSB's Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry, Department of Mechanical Engineering, and the Biomolecular Science and Engineering graduate program. Professor Plaxco also serves as Associate Director of the campus's Center for Bioengineering. Prior to joining UCSB in 1998, Dr. Plaxco received his Ph.D. from Caltech and performed postdoctoral studies at Oxford and the University of Washington. The intellectual property derived from his lab's work is being actively commercialized by multiple companies in the diagnostics and personal healthcare markets. Professor Plaxco has co-authored numerous patents and more than 170 papers on protein folding, protein dynamics, and folding-based biosensors and smart biomaterials. He has been recognized as one of the most highly cited chemists of the past decade. He serves on the scientific boards of numerous biotechnology firms, and has also written a popular science book on Astrobiology.
