malfunction in their patients on a routine basis. Research endeavors focusing on potential causes for
the dramatic upsurge in rates of thyroid disorders are providing insight relevant to treatment options,

10:30am-12:00pm – "Insulin Resistance, Diabetes and Systemic Disorders"

-Lory Laughter, RDH, MS  (1.5 CEU's)

Insulin resistance (IR) is considered a chronic and low level inflammatory condition. It is closely related to altered glucose tolerance, abdominal obesity, and coronary heart disease. IR is accompanied by an increase in the inflammatory cytokines like interleukin-1 and 6, tumor necrosis factor-, Levels of these cytokines also effect the progression of IR.  Periodontitis is the most common oral diseases. Pro-inflammatory cytokines are released in the disease process of periodontitis, including IL-1 and IL-6. Periodontitis can be attributed with exacerbation of IR.  Data in the literature supports a two way relationship" between diabetes and periodontitis.  The co-existence of systemic and oral inflammatory diseases warrants closer examination by dental professionals. Appropriate health history questions and review is essential in helping patients maintain oral health.
Objectives:
* Understand the role cytokines play in inflammatory disease.
* Recognize the relationship between IR and diabetes related to oral health.
* Develop health history questions designed to recognize possible inflammatory problems.
* Provide education for patients to help them play an active role in addressing inflammatory diseases.

Heidi is a motivating, knowledgable and enthusiastic speaker who will discuss her professional experiences in starting a dental hygiene practice in Montana. Montana law provides for direct access dental hygiene care in designated sites. Heidi chose to develop her practice in long term care facilities; however, many of the principles she will discuss apply to direct access practices in other environments. Although direct access is different from Idaho's Extended Access Endorsement(s) in many ways, some principles of this model apply to Idaho's general supervision options.
1. Discuss direct access dental hygiene in Montana.
2. Compare and contrast direct access dental hygiene to Idaho's general supervision extended access endorsement(s).
3. Outline a framework for developing a direct access dental hygiene practice.
4. Discuss the advantages of this model for the provider as well as the client/patient.
