York District Chartered Professional Accountants' Association CPD Seminar 

Tax Update, Business Succession Planning & AGM

An informative CPD session on Wednesday June 22, 2016 organized by York District Chartered Professional Accountants’ Association (YDCPAA).

This month’s event includes the Annual General Meeting (AGM) of the YDCPAA. An agenda will be provided at the meeting.

After the AGM, two speakers will present on the following topics:

Business Succession Planning

by Michael Goldberg, Partner, Minden Gross LLP

Michael will be sharing a real life case study illustrating the implementation and unwinding of a family business succession and equalization plan. The presentation will highlight many important tax concepts such as estate freezes, tax deferred corporate retirement funds, and will planning.

Michael will also discuss some practical planning opportunities in light of the recent changes to the eligible capital property rules.

Michael Goldberg is a Partner in the Tax Group and works with clients and their advisors to assist them with their corporate, estate, personal, and international tax planning needs. Michael has a business degree and chose tax as his legal specialty as it appealed to his practical and creative mind. Responsive and forthcoming, Michael ensures his clients always know where they stand and gets them the solutions they need when they need them. Michael's experiences outside of law have provided him with a unique understanding of how businesses run and the importance of any tax savings had. Michael cares a lot about his clients and goes to great lengths to help improve the operation of their enterprises.

As a prolific writer and speaker, Michael frequently publishes in a number of Wolters Kluwer tax publications and speaks to associations and industry groups on succession planning and current tax issues. Michael also presents a quarterly conference call, Tax Talk with Michael Goldberg, about current, relevant, and real life tax situations for professional advisors who serve high net worth clients.

 

Canadian & U.S. Tax Update – 2016

This session will look at some of the major personal tax changes that have occurred in 2016 in both Canada and the U.S. with an emphasis on tax rates and the current state of the U.S. estate tax. Recent tax cases and CRA technical interpretations of interest will also be examined.

Jamie Golombek is Managing Director, Tax & Estate Planning with CIBC in Toronto. As a member of the CIBC Wealth Strategies Group, Jamie works closely with advisors from across CIBC to support their high net worth clients and deliver integrated financial planning and strong advisory solutions. He joined the firm in 2008 after 12 years with a global investment company, where he was involved in both internal and external consulting on all areas of taxation and estate planning.

Jamie is quoted frequently in the national media as an expert on taxation, writes a weekly column called “Tax Expert” in the National Post, has appeared as a guest on BNN, CTV News, and The National and was a regular personal finance guest on The Marilyn Denis Show. Jamie has also worked for Deloitte’s as a tax specialist, where he specialized in both personal and corporate tax planning. He received his B.Com. from McGill University, earned his CA designation in Ontario and qualified as a U.S. CPA in Illinois. He has also obtained his Certified Financial Planning (CFP) and Chartered Life Underwriting (CLU) designations.
