40 Hour Sexual Violence Advocacy Training for Volunteers

About Breaking Free

Breaking Free's mission is to end all forms of prostitution and sex trafficking.

We do this by developing and providing ground-breaking programming, including: permanent housing, workforce development, educational support groups, community outreach initiatives, prevention and intervention strategies, innovative diversion programs for both victims and perpetrators, and public policy initiatives, all specifically designed to benefit survivors of sex trafficking and to end the demand.

Volunteers at Breaking Free

Volunteers are at the heart of what we do at Breaking Free. Thanks to the passion and commitment of our volunteers, we are able to provide quality services to women who have been victims of prostitution and sex trafficking in the Twin Cities and need assistance escaping the violence in their lives. We are so thankful for our volunteers and all of their wonderful work!

40 Hour Training Requirement

All Breaking Free volunteers who will be providing direct services to clients or their families (including supervised play, tutoring, emergency advocacy services, and other needs) are required to attend this 40 Hour Sexual Violence Advocacy Training. The training is required by state law for all persons working directly with sexual assault survivors. This comprehensive training spans the full spectrum of sexual violence and relevant topical issues, including legal issues, health and medical issues, advocacy, underserved populations, and prevention.

This training is also an excellent opportunity for personal and professional development, as it is rich with opportunities for introspection, interactivity, and learning new ways to ally with peers in the anti-oppression, anti-violence, and feminist movements. All participants who complete the full 40 hours of training will receive a Certificate of Completion. Aside from being of legal and interpersonal value, the training's intrinsic value cannot be overstated.

Please read more about the volunteer program, including the requirements for volunteering in different positions.

40 Hour Training Details

Breaking Free's first volunteer training cycle will take place on the following dates and times:

July 18th - July 29th
Monday - Friday
10:00am - 2:30pm

These dates have been chosen to target volunteers who will be able to come into the office to volunteer during office hours.

**Note: Please prepare to provide your own lunch. There will be a 30 minute lunch break every day during training.

Volunteers are required to be present at the training during the full 40 hours. If you are not able to complete the training during this cycle, please note that there will be additional trainings hosted in 2017. You may also contact Julia to see if you can sign up to do the training with another organization.
