Annual Reading/Writing Conference for Educators
Dedicated to the memory and legacy of Donald Graves
This conference is open to educators, administrator, literacy leaders & parents from throughout New England and Eastern Canada!
This year's conference will focus primarily on grades K-8, but educators at all grade levels are welcome.

Presented in partnership by the Arts Alliance of Northern New Hampshire and Conway School District, our 2017 conference features Katie Muhtaris & Kristin Ziemke, authors of Amplify: Digital Teaching and Learning in the K-6 Classroom, published by Heinemann.
About the conference:
“Using technology doesn’t mean we throw out those strategies that we’ve found to be successful with students,” write Katie Muhtaris and Kristin Ziemke. “It’s not the tools—it’s what we do with them that counts.”
Katie and Kristin start their presentation with our most important educational goals—literacy, independence, and critical thinking—and help connect them to the technology available in your classroom or school. Learn how to help students dig into texts, research their questions, and create powerful learning communities by using digital tools effectively, responsibly, and in combination with trusted artifacts.
Amplify does exactly what the title implies. "When introducing technological tools, we often apply the same practices and strategies we use in our daily teaching, but amplify their power with technology,” write Katie and Kristin. “We model what we want students to do with the technology, guide them to try it out with us, provide time for practice, then share as a class.”
They’ll help amplify your literacy curriculum with guidance on:
- explicitly teaching kids how to be effective digital readers and thinkers
- giving students practice with closely reading images, infographics, and video
- emphasizing student ownership and creativity
Whether your school is encouraging you to use more digital tools, you want to squeeze everything you can out of the one device in your classroom, or you’re in a 1:1 school, this conference will help sharpen your thinking about the place of technology in your work. You’ll discover how to gradually release responsibility to empower your students as you — and they — make the most of technology and literacy.
About the presenters:
Katie Muhtaris has enjoyed teaching and learning with her students in the Chicago Public School system for the last eight years. She is Nationally Board Certified as a Middle Childhood Generalist and holds a Master’s Degree in Teacher Leadership. In addition to her devotion to her students, Katie also leads staff development in person around the country and digitally around the globe on Inquiry-based learning, technology integration, and reading comprehension strategies. Katie is the author of the blog Inquiry Live in the Classroom where she writes about her day-to-day teaching practices and seeks to connect with educators around the world.
Kristin Ziemke has been teaching and learning from children in both urban and suburban schools for the past 13 years. She engages her first-grade students in authentic learning experiences where reading, thinking, collaboration, and inquiry are at the heart of the curriculum. An Apple Distinguished Educator, National Board Certified Teacher, and Chicago’s Tech Innovator of the Year, Kristin holds a Master’s Degree in Instructional Leadership. She constantly seeks opportunities to transform education through technology innovation, pairing best practice instruction with digital tools to capture thinking, foster creativity, differentiate instruction, and increase collaboration in the classroom and beyond.
