Enjoy a summer morning in the heart of the East Bay! Join us at City Slicker Urban Farms & Park to learn about how an industrial site was transformed into a neighborhood gathering place through the efforts of many, including tour leaders Lowney Architects.
Since their grassroots beginnings in 2001, City Slicker Farms has been in the vanguard of the 21st-century urban farming and food justice movement, offering skills training, community building and a commitment to social, economic and racial justice in the heart of the city.
Besides the farm, the project features community gathering space, space for nutrition demos, an orchard, playground and raised community garden beds for 28 families. Site-built structures include the main building which houses an office and restrooms, covered and open-air farm stands and a demonstration zone. The chicken coops and front gate result from student-involved design. The coop, designed and built by CCA students, is an innovative approach to a traditional simple building.
