EyesOpenIowa 2016 Annual Conference 

You are invited to attend the 2016 EyesOpenIowa Annual Conference, WISE About the Whys, November 1st and 2nd at Prairie Meadows Hotel and Convention Center in Altoona, Iowa.  

This engaging sexual health education conference brings together teachers, nurses, college students, professors, health educators and youth serving professionals from across the Midwest!

Professionals can choose from a variety of engaging and interactive workshops on essential topics in the adolescent sexual health field.  Along with dynamic keynote speakers, roundtable discussions, exhibitors with professional resources, and plenty of time for networking with other youth-serving professionals this conference is your key to effective and fun professional development.

We are thrilled to announce this year's keynote speakers:

Debra Hauser, MPH


Debra Hauser has been with Advocates for Youth for 23 years. In January 2012, Deb became the organization's fourth President and Executive Director, representing Advocates with the media, funders, and colleague organizations as well as speaking nationally and internationally about young people's rights to honest sexual health information, confidential sexual health services and equitable social and economic opportunities. She has been at the center of numerous innovations in the field of adolescent sexual health, including: co-founding the Future of Sex Education - an inniative producing the first-ever National Sexuality Education Standards; designing an innovative HIV/AIDS prevention and testing-to-treatment program on Historically Black Colleges and Universities; expanding the Great American Condom Campaign into a ground-breaking effort to normalize condom use on more than 1,000 college campuses across the U.S.; and helping to build the infrastructure of the LGBT youth movement in the Global South. Deb is committed to a cascading style of leadership that promotes youth activists as change agents and leaders in the field.

 

Dr. Amy Hasinoff

 

Dr. Amy Adele Hasinoff is an Assistant Professor in the Communications department at the University of Colorado - Denver.  She earned her PhD from the Institute of Communications Research at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, and completed a postdoc funded by SSHRC at McGill.  Her book, Sexting Panic (2015), is about the well-intentioned but problematic responses to sexing in the mass media, law and education. Her research also appears in journals such as New Media & Society, Critical Studies in Media Communication, and Feminist Media Studies.


Dr. Melisa Holmes 

An Atlanta native, Dr. Melisa Holmes is a graduate of The University of Georgia and earned her MD from the Medical College of Georgia. Following her Ob-Gyn residency at The Medical College of Virginia, Melisa joined the faculty at the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) where she held joint appointments in Obstetrics/Gynecology and Pediatrics. During her 14 years of clinical practice, she was director of the MUSC Teen Clinic and created a clinic for sexual assault survivors. As a nationally recognized advocate for adolescent health, she has served on the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists' Committee on Adolescent Health Care, and worked with National Campaign to Prevent Teen Pregnancy. In addition to co-authoring the Girlology series, she has written numerous scientific papers and text book chapters as well as articles and guest blogs.Currently, Melisa divides her time between seeing patients as a Pediatric & Adolescent Gynecologist at Greenville Health System, growing Girlology and Guyology.

Daniel Hoffman-Zinnel, Ed.D, CHES


Daniel Hoffman-Zinnel has been the Director of Education and Leadership at Planned Parenthood of the Heartland since February of 2014. Daniel is an Adjunct Instructor at Iowa Central Community and Des Moines University and a Respite Provider through Lutheran Services in Iowa. Prior to his work at PPHeartland, Daniel was the Regional Director of Proteus for six years providing program administration. Daniel has extensive non-profit experience working with the LGBTQ community, migrant and seasonal farmworkers, Latino community, and individuals with disabilities. Daniel successfully has a Doctorate of Education in Leadership from Creighton University. His dissertation was titled: Resilient Leadership: A Case study about a gay man’s journey of coming out and running for public office. He has a Master of Arts in Health Studies from the University of Alabama, Bachelor of Arts in Liberal Arts with Sociology and Psychology minors from Grand View University, and Associate of Arts from Iowa Central Community College.
