Life Changing Events - 8 hours Federal

This program will cover the tax aspects of many life changing events including:  Marriage (filing status options, year of marriage),Having children, 529 plans, post secondary education, moving out, getting married, moving back in, gifting , Divorce (filing status, dependency issues, property settlements, alimony, etc.) ,Retiring, SS benefit repayment if go back to work, Death of a spouse (filing status, basis, carryovers, final return) ,Parents needing care by children (living on own, in assisted living, moving in with children),Medical expenses (assisted living, nursing home, long-term care insurance), Basis of property & record keeping (basis overview, length of time to keep records, what records to keep)

TUESDAY June 20th (8 hours broken out as described below)

Elections – 2 hours: Covers a brief overview of the particular election and the procedures to make and/or revoke various elections often tax pros & certainly tax payers don’t think about, such as: 59(e) for certain amortizable items, Accrual method of reporting interest from US Savings Bonds,Amortize start-up and organization expenses , Capitalizing carrying charges, Claiming foreign taxes as credit v deduction, Electing entity tax status for noncorporate entities ,Mark-to-market election for traders, Obtaining or terminating S corporation status ,Out of bonus depreciation ,Out of installment reporting ,Out of treating interest when “secured by personal residence” (allowing tracing) ,Treating distributions in first 65 days as if in prior year

Inherited Property – 1 hour Discussion of basis of differing kinds of inherited assets,2010 effect on inherited assets,Income in respect of a decedent

Ethics – 2 hours  This topic discusses the issues of Circular 230 as it applies to the tax practice. Specific sections of Circular 230 are targeted as well as recent cases involving those sections. Procedures involving application processes and renewals are also covered. The goal of this class is to provide the attendee with information to make correct choices with regard to be in compliance with Circular 230.

Retirement Plan – 2 hours : Comparison of plans available , Contribution limits , Required minimum distributions , Early distribution penalty

Lawsuits – 1 hour :There are always two sides to a lawsuit. What are the tax effects on the person filing the lawsuit and the object of the lawsuit. There may be taxable income from the settlement. When it is taxable and when not will be discussed. On both sides, there may be legal expenses which may or may not be deductible. Find out what the rules are in this program.

Part 1 Individual - 5 CE is $290 ($320 Non-Member)
Part 2 Business - 5 CE is $365 ($395 Non-Member)
Part 3 Representation Ethics - 2 CE is $220 ($250 Non-Member)

REGISTRATION CLOSES JUNE 12th. 

Breakfast, lunch and snacks are included. Registration will be open at 7:30 am Class starts at 8:00 am and goes until 4:30 pm.

MNSEA is registered with the National Association of State Boards of Accountancy (NASBA) as a sponsor of continuing professional education on the National Registry of CPE Sponsors.  State boards of accountancy have final authority on the acceptance of individual courses for CPE credit.  Complaints regarding registered sponsors may be submitted to the National Registry of CPE Sponsors through its website:  www.learningmarket.org

Refund Policy:  All attendee conference cancellations must be confirmed in writing.  Cancellations will be accepted up to and before ten days prior to the seminar, less $50.00 administration fee.  “No Shows” will not be granted refunds.  Registration substitutions are accepted providing that nonmembers pay an additional fee of $50.00.  This additional fee may be used towards MNSEA membership.  Refunds will not be given due to poor weather conditions; handout materials will be available for pick up.
